☀️What can you do to heal the land?

🌱Plant more: Native plants heal the land. The more that can be returned to the land, the more food, habitat, and shelter there are for native animals and insects. Native species also help create climate-resilient landscapes.

💧Lessen your impact: The less we consume in our day-to-day lives, the less we need to extract from the land. Need a new item? Check your local thrift stores first or see if you can borrow it from a friend or family member.

🐢Know the land you call home: What are the habitats around you? What native plants and animals do you share the landscape with? Whose land are you on?

❤️Caring starts with relationships, including the ones with our plant and animal neighbours. Learn more and share your experience with us at https://hlc.caroliniancanada.ca/

❓Did you know that 30% of species at risk in Canada live in the Carolinian Zone?

🌎 Today, on World Biodiversity Day, swipe to meet some of the amazing species at risk that we share the landscape with.

☀️At Carolinian Canada, we work to protect the Carolinian Zone - Ontario's biodiversity hotspot - including the many rare and at-risk species that call this land home.

🐍 One easy way you can support species at risk is to grow native plants where you live. No matter the size of your yard, garden, patio, or balcony, every plant counts.

🦋 Do you encounter wildlife in your garden? We’d love to hear about it! Share your wildlife stories with us by tracking your garden activities and observations on the In the Zone tracker: https://itz.caroliniancanada.ca/user/login

One of the most welcome signs of spring is the arrival of migrating birds who pass through the Carolinian Zone. Their diversity, colour, and songs fill the sky and our hearts, and the native habitat that we steward is critical to their survival.

Warblers, like the Palm Warbler, arrive in need of rest and food to power their journey and can be spotted foraging for insects and nectar on flowering native trees and plants. A few of the flowering native trees and plants that support warblers include:

🌲Trees ➡ Oaks (Quercus spp.), Willows (Salix spp.), and Birches (Betula spp.)
🌳Shrubs ➡ Dogwoods (Cornus spp.), Viburnums (Viburnum spp.), and Serviceberries (Amelanchier spp.)
🌿Herbaceous plants ➡ Virginia Creeper (Parthenocissus inserta), New England Aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae)

This World Migratory Bird Day, consider planting more native trees and plants in your yard to give migrant birds a warm welcome as they arrive after their long journeys.

Look for native plant nurseries and sales near you this spring:
