Day 99 : Remember Me constantly — not remember Me means Ram, Ram, Ram, Ram, Ram, Ram. Don't cheat others. Remember all these are living beings. The life in them is the life in me and this enlivening essence is the Truth, the Lord, the God.

I am only an instrument. He is the one who is the doer. I don't do anything. Thy will be done, O Lord. Not mine, not mine, not mine.

With that attitude — even though you are working in the theatre of life, in the world outside, a part of your mind has never left Him.

Day 98 : Any emotion in you, when it is under your control, it is a beauty, a strength. But when any emotion in you overwhelms you and instead of you having the emotion, the emotion is having you — then it is ugliness, a tragedy.

You have pity for others — but pity so much that I don't know what to do now. Then pity has you under its grip. It becomes sentimentalism. Sentiment is a beauty of man. Sentimentalism is a shackle, a chain around your throat.

You get angry. It is perfectly right. Without getting angry, you can't live in this mighty world. But if anger gets you — madness.

Day 97 : Quality by devotion, quantity by karma yoga and direction by the path of knowledge. By these three methods, when the thoughts — direction, quality and quantity — are changed, the human being as expressed in the world outside is totally parinaam, totally different because his mind and constitution is changed.

When Siddhartha became Buddha or Narendra became Vivekananda, it is not the man who changed — but his mind and attitude changed. Hence, the new personality emerges out of the same body.

Day 96 : O Guru, decide for yourself — He is farther than the farthest and nearer than the nearest. Why this contradictory term?

It is not contradictory. Because It is all-pervading. Where is space? Farther than the farthest and nearer than the nearest.

Even inside my stomach after breakfast. Sukshmatvat tad avijneyam.

Day 95 : The uninformed seeker feels that to give up the world and run into a monastery, escapism from the throes of life — they think is spirituality. Bhagavad Gita is dead against it.

An individual who is vibrantly acting in the world outside alone has a chance of ever reaching anywhere near the gates of heaven. Not one who is suddenly running away from the world, especially when the situations are rather threatening.

You will not find a crowd following you. No! You will be lonely because that path is very narrow.

Day 94: Of all those emotions, the teacher here specifically mentions that a man of perfection is one who is not caught within the web of raga, bhaya, krodha. Raga — attachment, bhaya — fear, krodha — anger. Why is it that only these three are mentioned? These three are interconnected.

Once you have got attachment with someone, you are always afraid of its security. Your child, the fellow has gone and he said that he will come at 8 o'clock and it is 8.30 and he has not come. Fear. You start seeing him in accident, almost.

Where there is attachment, there comes fear.

*Day 93* : Shanti — forbearance. An ability to suffer silently the little pinpricks of the body. In the world, no arrangement can be perfect. Little, little disturbances and sufferings will be there.

It is too hot. Full stop. It is cold in winter. Full stop. Little thing, making it a huge problem. A theme to discuss and waste time. Does it become warm after all that discussion? You become more cold. Winter is cold. Full stop. I don't like cold. Get out — instead of complaining.

A spiritual student must be able to live above these little pinpricks of life. Live in a cheerful attitude. That these little disturbances is so below my dignity to complain and give even a second thought to it.

— Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda

When I desire a thing, my mind's thoughts are running towards it. And when an obstacle comes between me and the object desired, my thoughts instead of reaching peacefully my object of desire, gets diverted at that obstacle. This angle of deviation created for desire and against the obstruction is called anger.

When once this mind is agitated, then I can't hear the warnings that the intellect is giving me — that don't do this, don't do it, don't. I can't hear. And I hug the body and run towards the object.

When the mind is pacified, the mind returns back to its normal condition and goes near the intellect and the intellect starts asking questions. Such self-insulting actions are called sins.

Day 91 : Can anyone say that I am very happy, but I am agitated? It is a contradiction.

When you are calm and quiet within, joy and happiness alone can be our experience. And whenever we are joyous and happy, there cannot be any agitations of the mind.

Quieter the mind, greater the happiness. But the mind must be rendered quiet. And therefore, controlling the mind and purifying the mind and regulating the mind, is the secret of really achieving, enduring happiness.
