The Lloydminster Local Immigration Partnership (LLIP) is hosting its 2024 Blanket Exercise
June is the month that we celebrate National Indigenous History. A time to celebrate and honor the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Indigenous peoples. It's an opportunity to learn about the diverse traditions, languages, and achievements of Indigenous communities, both past and present. Let's take this month to educate ourselves, support Indigenous-led initiatives, and reflect on the resilience and strength of Indigenous peoples. Together, we can acknowledge the past, appreciate the present, and work towards a more inclusive future.

This month provides an opportunity for everyone in Lloydminster and Canada to reflect on our colonial past, and learn more about Indigenous culture, diversity, heritage and experience.

The LLIP will be hosting a Blanket Exercise ceremony on June 14th , 2024 at the Servus Sports Centre OTS Room beginning at 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. See flyer for more details. I encourage immigrants , newcomers and the people of Lloydminster to attend one of the many events hosted around the city this month including the LLIP Blanket Exercise to learn about Indigenous cultures and history. This year, the Black History Month in a pivotal collaboration with the City of Lloydminster/Sask Lotteries Community Grant Program and eight Elementary and High Schools, LLIP seeks to shine a light on Black unsung heroes and heroines as well as address difficult topics like Racism and the use of the “N Word” with students.

Anchored around the empowering theme “Black Excellence: A Heritage to Celebrate; a Future to Build”, students of all backgrounds and ages from grade 6 - 12 participated and celebrated the myriad contributions, challenges, and vibrant legacies of blacks in the spirit of diversity and inclusivity in our community. The goal was to empower and help non-blacks to learn more about Blacks and challenge the stereotypes they have learnt about black people.

The success of this years’ Black History Month was not possible without the participation of schools in both the Lloydminster Public School Division and the Lloydminster Catholic School Division. We thank our presenter, Ben Aquaye and Mayor Gerald Aalberts in taking part of this series. Let us continue to celebrate and honor the contributions of Black Individuals throughout the year.
