This weekend the We Live Up Team was at Unearthing SPARCs of Creativity with SPARC Supporting Performing Arts in Rural and Remote Communities. We had a blast and got to show off Sudbury during our Up Here mural tour.

Quotes are from artist statements, you can read the all info at www.uphere.com/murals

1: Untitled by DRPN Soul - Presented by Black Lives Matter - Sudbury (2021)
“It’s beautiful to see young Black kids come and see me doing this work and they can relate.”

2: “Introduction à la danse moderne” by Mariana Lafrance (2018)
“The beginner’s awkwardness the artist observes in introductory modern dance classes.”

3: “Walk Safe, Don’t Slip” by Trevor Wheatley (2015)
The mural used to overlook a parking lot, which “turned into an impromptu skating rink” most winters. The words, “Walk Safe, Don’t Slip” are now covered by the Place des Arts building.

4: Untitled by Ola Volo (2016)
“Her intricate, winding works tell stories by bringing together animals, architecture, and nature in pieces rich with symbolism.”

5-6: “Good Wolf, Bad Wolf” by BirdO (2018)
“The one that wins is the one that you feed.”

In 2013, we knocked on Dr. Ricardo de la Riva’s door and asked if we could photograph his eyes for a mural. He said yes without hesitation.

His portrait became part of Prends soin de toi, one of our very first pieces of public art: a mural on Ste-Anne Street that paid tribute to the pioneers of Sudbury’s old Hôpital St-Joseph. His eyes watched over that corner for years.

Dr. de la Riva passed away this week at 96. He came to Canada from Spain in 1956, fell in love with a franco-ontarian, settled in Sudbury, and spent the rest of his life giving back to this community — as a family doctor, as a city councillor for 28 years, as an advocate for francophones in le Moulin à fleur, and as a champion for young people in sport.

A true pioneer. A monument.

Hi!! I’m Blaine (they/them) and I’m so excited to be joining the Up Here team this year 💫

I’m a community-based writer, typewriter poet, theatre maker, and book binder. My work mostly lives at the intersection of poetry, performance, and public space (which honestly makes Up Here a dream place to land.)

This festival lands on my birthday every year, it has always been a time of celebration and joy. Now, I get to help make it happen alongside an incredible group of artists and organizers. So if you see me around, come say hi
