🌍 Happy Earth Day from the BPBA! 🌍
Today, we celebrate the rugged beauty of the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula. From the turquoise waters of Georgian Bay to the ancient cliffs of the Escarpment, we are incredibly lucky to call this place home.
The theme for Earth Day 2026 is “Our Power, Our Planet”, emphasizing that environmental progress is driven by the daily actions of communities, educators, workers, and families rather than relying solely on policy or elections. It highlights the importance of consistent, collective action to protect ecosystems, ensure clean air and water, and build climate resilience.
Here are four ways you can help our local environment:
> Keep the "Dark" in Dark Skies: We are a Dark Sky Preserve! Help our nocturnal wildlife and migrating birds by turning off unnecessary outdoor lights or switching to motion sensors and shielded, downward-pointing fixtures.
> Fight the "Invaders": Learn to identify invasive species like Phragmites or Garlic Mustard that threaten our local biodiversity. Removing even a small patch in your own yard helps native plants thrive.
> Be a Water Steward: Whether it's reducing plastic use or ensuring only rain goes down the storm drain, protecting the water quality of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay is vital for our ecosystem and our drinking water.
> Leave No Trace: If you’re out on the trails today, remember: "Take only pictures, leave only footprints." Staying on marked trails protects rare ferns and orchids that can take years to recover from being stepped on.
Let’s keep the Peninsula wild and healthy for generations to come! 🌿
