Building a strong community and improving lives in Haliburton and Kawartha Lakes. On January 1st, 1967 United Way was incorporated in the Town of Lindsay.

History of the United Way for the
City of Kawartha Lakes

For more than seven decades people have been caring for others in our community. In the 1980s the United Way board of directors responded to the needs of citizens outside the town of Lindsay by expanding to include all of Victoria County. In August 2002, in response to the change of the name of our geographic catchment area, a final name change occurred: United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes. Across Canada there are approximately 117 United Ways. Each one is autonomous and has a locally elected volunteer Board of Directors that sets the policy and direction of the organization. This United Way is no longer just a funding agency! It is a community builder, enabling people to make a difference through community partnerships, investment and collaboration. The concept of people working together to care for one another in our community means more than 25,000 individuals can access programs and services.

At United Way Haliburton Kawartha Lakes, we are women-led, and the women on our team deliver programs, develop strategies, raise funds, build partnerships, and strengthen relationships across our community.

Today, on Women in Nonprofit Awareness Day, we are recognizing our team for the expertise and dedication they bring to our mission.

Our Campaign theme this year is Raising Hope, Growing Community. 🌱🫶

As we begin a new campaign, we are reminded that a thriving community is one where we come together to support one another. Families and individuals in our communities are facing a range of challenges, and our local service providers are doing incredible work to match their resources to the needs.

Through investments in local programs and services, we can help address both the immediate needs people are facing today and the longer-term challenges that affect their ability to thrive. Every contribution helps strengthen the network of care that exists within our community.

We know that no single organization can do this work alone. When service providers, community organizations, volunteers, donors, and neighbours work together, we create stronger connections and a more resilient network.

Raising hope means believing that positive change is possible. Growing community means making that change happen together. This campaign is about more than meeting needs; it is about building a community where everyone has the opportunity to feel supported, connected, and hopeful about their future.

Free transportation provided by HHHS is available. Service Canada, Service Ontario and CRA will be attending, with tax clinics available and 20+ community partners participating for no/low barrier information and supports on-site.

🎉 We are excited to share that we have now grown, harvested and donated 100,253 pounds of fresh produce throughout Haliburton County and the City of Kawartha Lakes.

🥕 As food insecurity continues to be an increasing challenge in our communities, we are proud to play a part in improving access to fresh, healthy food, increasing food literacy and building stronger, more sustainable local food systems.

🌱 Since 2019, Edwin Binney’s Community Farm and Education Centre has been working to address food insecurity across the City of Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County. What began as a food security initiative by United Way Haliburton Kawartha Lakes has grown into an important source of fresh produce for local food banks and meal programs, helping provide fresh food to people who rely on these services.

💚 This is a major milestone for our farm and community, and we are incredibly grateful to our partners, supporters, staff and volunteers who continue to help make it possible.

As we gather this Thanksgiving, we acknowledge that the land on which we live, work, and celebrate is the traditional territory of the Indigenous communities of the Mississauga, Anishinabek, Huron-Wendat, and Haudenosaunee peoples.

This is a time to give thanks for the people we love and value.
