Kawartha-Haliburton Crime Stoppers

Crime Stoppers began in 1976. A Canadian-born detective by the name of Greg MacAleese, working in Albuquerque, New Mexico was investigating a gas station hold-up. Unfortunately, there were no leads and the investigation came to a stop after 6 weeks.

MacAleese believed that for every person that committed a crime, there was at least one other person who knew about it. He also believed that people were afraid of repercussions after coming to the Police with information.

MacAleese made cash rewards available for individuals willing to offer information. Within 48 hours of posting the reward, the Police had two people arrested and later convicted. This was the birth of our CRIME STOPPERS program that is now executed all across the Country.

Crime Stoppers has three major components that work in conjunction with local police departments to solve crimes and help keep communities safe. With over 1000 programs world wide, Crime Stoppers serves as a valuable asset to any law enforcement agency.
