Community Living Trent Highlands

Community Living Trent Highlands We serve the City of Kawartha Lakes, Haliburton Country and Peterborough. That work is now underway and will continue on in the coming year.

Our mission is to inspire respect and equality for people with a developmental disability by promoting community knowledge, organizational excellence and individual quality of life. In 2017, the members of two boards of directors voted to amalgamate Community Living Central Highlands and Community Living Peterborough to form Community Living Trent Highlands. They made this choice neither out of ne

cessity nor mandate, but rather because together we will be stronger, brighter and more responsive to the immense needs that exist in the futures of our communities. It is a huge undertaking to amalgamate the long-standing practices, processes, traditions and cultures of two agencies. The members of the new board of directors for Community Living Trent Highlands are up to the challenge. We are fully aware of the mammoth task that we face; yet, we feel a sense of excitement as we begin to harmonize what is best of both organizations. The three communities served by Community Living Trent Highlands have had enduring relationships with their former agencies, and each brings with it a legacy of inclusion, innovation and responsiveness. In the pages of this report you will read the accomplishments of the recently amalgamated Community Living Central Highlands (formerly Haliburton County and Kawartha Lakes) and Community Living Peterborough. An integral part of an agency like ours is its partnerships and presence in the community. It is clear in these pages that connections and collaborations are numerous and celebrated. As our three former agencies were beginning in the late 50’s and early 60’s, families and advocates were demanding change and something better for their loved ones. Now in 2017, as we are forming the new Community Living Trent Highlands, the climate is similar. As a sector we are striving for something better, learning year after year about deeper inclusion, community development and belonging. Our new agency will continue build on our legacies, and will strive to create bridges to community and networks of inclusion in Haliburton, Kawartha Lakes and Peterborough. The future is bright and filled with possibility as Community Living Trent Highlands brings 173 years of combined experience to meet the challenges of the future for the people and communities we serve.

Community Living Trent Highlands Invites OPSEU Local 358 Back to the Bargaining Table

Management Team Makes Bid to End 20 Day Old Strike and Address Union Concerns Locally

The Management Team at Community Living Trent Highlands has invited its Union Local 358 back to the bargaining table in a bid to end the 20 day old strike which began at midnight on Friday, May 22nd.
Local 358 of OPSEU represents more than 300 of CLTH's full and part-time staff.

“While we certainly are aware of the Union’s province-wide efforts to seek a retroactive increase from the provincial government, we're committed to supporting and further strengthening our relationship with Local 358 and their members in Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton” said Teresa Jordan, CLTH Executive Director. “Tuesday, I reached out to the Union’s local leadership and asked them back to the table to finish negotiating a mutually agreeable contract at the local level” she said.

Founded in 2017 from three agencies that date back to the 1950s and 60s, CLTH serves approximately 1,000 people who live throughout Peterborough, the City of Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County. CLTH is funded primarily by the Ontario Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services although it receives additional funding from the City of Kawartha Lakes and many others.

“I asked the Union to meet us because we believe this is the best way to settle this strike and get people back to work," Jordan said. “We’re willing to meet any time, as early as this afternoon” she said.

Today, we learned the result of our final offer vote, it was not accepted. Given this, result we are assured that unionized employees of CLTH had the opportunity to exercise their right to choose, as 301 union members cast their vote. We respect the outcome of this vote and the assurance it offers that Local 358 is fully committed to continuing their labour action against the provincial government.
In the coming days during this labour interruption our most important priority and our 100% focus is delivering services and support to our residents and the many people who rely upon us.
We continue to believe in a locally negotiated settlement. However, we await the results of the discussions between OPSEU and the provincial government. We remain ready, as we have been these past months, to go back to the table and negotiate a fair and reasonable settlement that works for both CLTH and Local 358.

People with lived experience are the driving force behind what we do at Community Living Trent Highlands. Connecting with people who live with intellectual and developmental disabilities helps us – and everyone – in communities across Ontario.

Our union members are now engaged in a legal strike affecting all our locations and supports.
In the absence of our trained, skilled, and expert teams, we simple cannot offer the full range of our supports. We recognize that this is a difficult and uncertain time for the community and in particular the community members that we support. CLTH remains committed to providing ongoing updates as the situation evolves.
