After years of advocacy by the OFAH, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is proposing to establish a sandhill crane season in parts of northern and central Ontario. The government has opened a 30-day consultation period for Proposals to Amend the Canadian Migratory Birds Regulations, including the following proposals:
• Establish a Sandhill Crane hunting season in Ontario’s Hudson and James Bay District, and portions of the Northern and Central Districts.
• Establish a 7-day Canada Goose hunting season in southern Ontario’s Wildlife Management Units (WMU) 69A, 70 to 73, 77 to 81, and 86 to 93 during the month of February.
• Discontinue the production of hard copy/paper Migratory Game Bird Hunting permits and regulation summaries, as early as the beginning of the 2027–2028 hunting season.
