In celebration of Endangered Species Day, this week's field find is the threatened species American Water-willow (Justicia americana), observed in bloom last summer in Niagara Falls. ๐ฟ
This aquatic plant is currently listed as "Threatened" in Canada and Ontario, and is at risk of becoming endangered if pressures are not addressed.
Native to Southern Ontario and Quebec, populations have declined in recent years due to water level fluctuations, habitat fragmentation and loss, human development, invasive species, and climate change.
At Land Care Niagara we are proud to support, and have previously supported, restoration efforts of this species in the Niagara region.
