This weeks field find is a polyphemus moth caterpillar (Antheraea polyphemus)! LCN staff found this little eating machine at one of our past Rural Tree Planting sites, while conducting survival assessments. 🐛

Did you know that when threatened, this caterpillar can make clicking noises to try and scare off predators? If this acoustic deterrent does not work, the caterpillar will actually vomit on the predator which can make the predator sick!! 🤢

Planting a tree is just the beginning. Helping it survive is the real challenge. 🌱

In our latest Stories from the Greenbelt, Land Care Niagara is digging into what gives young trees the best chance to thrive, combining field research, local knowledge, and decades of data to guide better planting practices across Niagara. 🌳

In celebration of Endangered Species Day, this week's field find is the threatened species American Water-willow (Justicia americana), observed in bloom last summer in Niagara Falls. 🌿

This aquatic plant is currently listed as "Threatened" in Canada and Ontario, and is at risk of becoming endangered if pressures are not addressed.

Native to Southern Ontario and Quebec, populations have declined in recent years due to water level fluctuations, habitat fragmentation and loss, human development, invasive species, and climate change.

At Land Care Niagara we are proud to support, and have previously supported, restoration efforts of this species in the Niagara region.

To learn more about American water-willow, and what you can do to help, visit the "Species-at-Risk" section of our resource library on our website! 🌱

Looking to start an eco-friendly garden? It's not too late!!

Land Care Niagara is a proud retailer of Northern Wildflowers, a Canadian company based in Northern Ontario. We are selling 50 different native seed species and 4 seed mix varieties, all from . 🍁

May is a great month to sow your seeds, as the soil is moist, temperatures are still cool, but the soil has warmed from that frozen winter state! Many of our varieties don't require stratification, but if you've got a must-have species that does, don't worry! You can try "speed- stratification" by alternating between the fridge and the freezer.

Whether you prefer to have your seeds shipped directly to you or pick them up locally in Vineland, we’ve made it easy to get started. Plus a portion of every purchase supports Land Care Niagara’s conservation projects, so you’re not just planting a garden, you’re helping your community flourish! 🌼

Visit the LCN Store (link below) to browse our full selection and start your native planting journey. Happy planting! 🌱🌎

This week's field find is American robin's (Turdus migratorius) eggs found at our Re-Leaf nursery last week!! 🥚

Did you know that American robins breed from April to July and produce 2-3 broods per season? Those striking blue eggs are a result of a pigment called biliverdin, which is deposited on the eggshell as the female robin lays the egg. This pigment is thought to help protect the egg from sun exposure, and may even signal a healthy mom! 🐦

Keep an eye out for these eggs in your own backyard!👀

In 2025, Land Care Niagara in partnership with the had an amazing opportunity to explore the restoration of Niagara’s unique native brook trout population in the Upper 12 Mile Creek watershed.

Funded by the , this one-year project sparked an exciting opportunity to showcase the story of this critical waterway and its ecological importance to Niagara.

This video is an overview of that journey, pulling together real footage from the field, from the species we encountered to the field methodology used by our team.

If you’ve been following our 9-part « Getting Hooked on 12 Mile Creek » miniseries, this video offers a broader view of the project. If you haven’t seen the series yet, you can still explore it on Land Care Niagara’s Instagram and pages for a closer look at brook trout, their lifecycle, and the importance of this cold-water creek.

We hoped you enjoyed the "Getting Hooked on 12 Mile Creek" series, and this final look at the project in action! 🐟 🌱
