The United Way was born from the idea that we can do more together than we can apart. The United Way concept in Lethbridge & South Western Alberta has roots dating back to as early as 1941 when it began as the Community Chest. re seemed to be a different fund for every month of the year and it always seemed to be the same band of hardy volunteers carrying the workload. Elton called a meeting of representatives from active fundraising organizations and other groups who needed funds to carry out their work. The goal was to save time, energy and money by running one strong fundraising campaign together. The Community Chest was off to a good start. All those years ago, Southern Albertans opened their hearts and reached out with love and compassion. They recognized the fundamental human need to care about one another. The same need is at the core of our mission statement.

In Canada, on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, we remember the lives taken and stand with everyone who continues to be impacted by gender based violence.

This day is also a call to action in that creating safer communities requires all of us. United Way continues to support local programs that provide crisis support, counselling and resources that help our individuals in the local area. We are calling for donations to the United Way so we can continue investing in programs that help support our community.

We invite our community to join the action on the most generous day of the year, and to please donate to the United Way. Across Lethbridge and South Western Alberta, community support helped thousands of people access the programs they needed most through 2024-2025. This past year, United Way brought agencies and donors together to strengthen local services like food security programs, mental health supports, family services, and crisis response solutions. When people show up for one another, the impact reaches far into our community. And when you stay involved, real change continues to grow. Here's just a few ways we made an impact last year. Our Story

The United Way was born from the idea that we can do more together than we can apart. The United Way concept in Lethbridge & South Western Alberta has roots dating back to as early as 1941 when it began as the Community Chest. The Community Chest was organized by a group of citizens in effort to curb the multiplicity of requests for funds which came after the outbreak of the Second World War. Early in the war, Lethbridge Mayor D. H. Elton called a meeting of representatives from active fundraising organizations and groups who needed funds. The goal was to save time, energy and money by running one strong fundraising campaign together. The Community Chest was off to a good start, raising $56,067 in its first year. Fast forward 75 years. Although the needs have changed, our goal has not. We want to see a thriving community where every individual, child and family has the resources to succeed.

The United Way of Lethbridge & South Western Alberta is one of nearly 100 United Ways in Canada. Together, we are Canada’s local community-builders - one movement, but hyper local, making local issues like poverty and social isolation in our communities unignorable.

Our aim is to alleviate the conditions of the most vulnerable today, and also to change the trajectory for tomorrow and make a difference with real impact on local lives.
