October is Child Abuse Prevention Month. In recognition, Minister of Children and Family Services Searle Turton has issued a statement on this important awareness month.

It reads in part: “Every child deserves to be safe, supported and live a life free from abuse. That is why we take the month of October to raise awareness of Child Abuse Prevention, especially the importance of reporting abuse."

Each of our participating businesses has created a blue-themed item that will be available throughout October with a portion of proceeds going to support the Aurora Child and Youth Advocacy Centre.

We all have a role in keeping kids safe. Strong communities help keep kids safe.
Speaking up can be an important first step in helping someone access the support and resources they need.
• Check in when a child seems different. Listen and take them seriously
• Notice concerning adult behaviour and if you see or hear something that worries you, say something
• Report videos or other online content that exploit, threaten, or bully children
• Together, we can help create safer, more supportive communities where every child and young person feels protected and valued.

Aurora Centre is honoured to receive an Alberta Community Justice Award for our service to victims.

Aurora CEO Kristine Cassie accepted the award from Mike Ellis, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services at a special ceremony held in Lethbridge October 2.

Every two years, the Community Justice Awards pay tribute to the people and organizations whose efforts help keep communities safe and resilient.

Aurora Centre was nominated by Lethbridge Police Services, Chief of Police Shahin Mehdizadeh and supported with a nod of approval by Minister Nathan Neudorf, MLA Lethbridge East.

“LPS (Lethbridge Police Service) is honoured to nominate Aurora, previously known as the Chinook Sexual Assault Centre & Child and Youth Advocacy Centre, for the Alberta Community Justice Award in the Representing and Assisting Victims category. This recognition is well deserved because Aurora provides compassionate, trauma-informed and coordinated support that helps victims of crime navigate some of the most difficult moments of their lives with dignity, clarity and care.,” wrote the Chief in his nomination.

“Aurora’s work is grounded in a simple but powerful belief: victims should never have to carry the weight of trauma alone. Their team walks alongside those harmed from the earliest moments of crisis through the often-complex police and court process, ensuring they are supported, informed, and treated with respect at every step. They reduce barriers, ease fear, and help victims feel heard and empowered at a time when many feel overwhelmed and vulnerable,” he added.

Thanks to Chief Mehdizadeh and the Alberta Government for this award. Our congratulations to the other local Alberta Community Justice Award Recipients including: Constable Chris Andrade Lethbridge Police Service, Lethbridge Family Services, Kelly Lepine from McMan South in Pincher Creek, Kevin Anderson from Lethbridge Correctional Centre, and Landon Gross from Landon Gross Associates Counselling Services Ltd.
