Wearing Orange in Recognition of Truth and Reconciliation

Today, members of the SACLA team are wearing orange as we prepare to recognize National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30.

Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity to honour the children who never returned home, Survivors of residential schools, and their families and communities. It is also a reminder of the importance of listening, learning and understanding the lasting impacts of the residential school system.

At SACLA, our work is grounded in dignity, respect, inclusion and the belief that every person deserves to be valued and heard. Today, we wear orange in recognition of that responsibility and in support of the ongoing journey toward reconciliation.

Mitch Lawson and Christina Spooner are attending the WorkFirst Alberta Summit. It has been a wonderful two days of engagement, advocacy, and learning on what Alberta Government is doing to support employees and employers in addrressing Alberta's workforce.
SACLA and Catalyst embrace opportunities such as this to influence the direction of this sector and improve the lives of people with disabilities.
To quote Minister Neudorff "When Albertans work Alberta works." Agreed

SACLA was pleased to welcome members of the Piikani Nation to Lethbridge this week for two days of collaborative training and learning.
The sessions brought together members of the Piikani team and SACLA staff to explore a range of topics supporting quality disability services, including Philosophy of Support, Medication Administration, Abuse Prevention and Response, Advocacy, MyCompass, Personal Care, Trauma-Informed Care and more.
This training is particularly meaningful as Piikani Nation works to establish a much-needed disability support service within its own community -creating greater opportunity for individuals and families to access supports closer to home and within their community.
What made these two days especially meaningful, however, went beyond the training itself.
It was an opportunity to share knowledge, learn from one another and build a relationship grounded in respect, collaboration and a shared commitment to supporting people to live meaningful and inclusive lives in their communities.
We were particularly grateful to hear from the Piikani team that they felt welcomed, respected and that there was genuine care behind SACLA’s approach. That feedback means a great deal to us and reflects the kind of organization we continually strive to be.

We look forward to continuing to build this relationship and supporting Piikani as they move forward with this important service.
This is what meaningful partnership looks like: learning together, sharing knowledge and strengthening communities.

🏆 Congratulations to our 2026 SACLA Kickball Champions - Team ICE! 🏆

Following last week’s fantastic SACLA Annual Pancake Breakfast & Kickball Tournament, we wanted to take a moment to recognize the team that took home this year’s championship trophy!

A huge CONGRATULATIONS to the team from Independent Counselling Enterprises (ICE) on capturing the 2026 SACLA Kickball Tournament championship! 🥇

ICE joined teams from Ability Resource Association, Cardston Support Services, CORE Medicine Hat, Edenbridge, Peak, Taber Special Needs and SACLA for an afternoon that brought together people from across Southern Alberta for some friendly competition - and a lot of fun.

There were plenty of great plays, laughs and competitive moments throughout the tournament, but what stood out most was the enthusiasm, encouragement and sportsmanship demonstrated by everyone who participated.

Events like this are about much more than winning a trophy. They are about participation, belonging, friendship and creating opportunities for people to connect with their community and with one another.

That spirit was on full display throughout the day.

To everyone at ICE: congratulations on a well-earned victory, and thank you for bringing such tremendous energy to this year's tournament. We hope that championship trophy has found a place of honour! 🏆

And once again, thank you to all eight participating organizations, their teams, support staff, volunteers, sponsors,and supporters for helping make the 2026 tournament such a success.

We’re already looking forward to the rematch next year! 😉
