Lethbridge Police have charged a 56-year-old male with impaired driving causing bodily harm following a pedestrian collision that resulted in life-threatening injuries.

On March 2 just before 4 p.m., police responded to a report of a pedestrian collision at the intersection of 13 Street and 3 Avenue North. A 78-year-old male pedestrian was transported by EMS to Chinook Regional Hospital with significant head injuries, and later transferred to Calgary.

The investigation determined a Dodge Ram truck was travelling eastbound on 3 Avenue then proceeded to turn southbound on 13 Street, colliding with an elderly pedestrian. The driver displayed signs of impairment and following further investigation was subsequently charged.

Joseph Cameron Brewster, 56, of Lethbridge, is charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm and driving over .08. Brewster was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court April 29.

Lethbridge Police have charged two males with impaired driving offences following two, unrelated collisions during the early morning hours Sunday.

On January 18, just before 12:30 a.m., police and EMS responded to a report of a single vehicle rollover involving a Jeep Patriot in the westbound lanes of Whoop Up Drive under the Scenic Drive overpass. There were three male occupants inside the vehicle and one was transported to hospital for treatment of serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. Following further investigation, the 24-year-old driver was found to be impaired and subsequently charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm and dangerous operation causing bodily harm.

Approximately 1.5 hours later, at 2 a.m., an officer travelling westbound in the 500 block of 6 Avenue South observed an Audi that had collided with a light standard on the median. A male driver exited the vehicle, but upon seeing police, jumped back into the driver’s seat. Police prevented the vehicle from leaving the scene and the driver was subsequently arrested. Following further investigation, the 26-year-old driver was issued an Immediate Roadside Sanction – Fail resulting in a 30-day seizure of his vehicle, 12-month license suspension and $1,000 fine.

While the holiday season has ended, police are reminding drivers that Check Stops are conducted year-round and officers will remain vigilant in the pursuit of impaired drivers. If you are planning to drink or use intoxicating substances, plan ahead for a safe ride home.

The Lethbridge Police Service concluded it’s annual Christmas Check Stop campaign with four impaired drivers removed from the road during the month-long enforcement project.

While the goal of the Check Stop Campaign is to locate and apprehend impaired drivers due to the significant risk they pose to public safety, it’s also hoped the highly-visible Check Stops act as a deterrent to those who might otherwise drink and drive.

During the campaign, approximately 1,768 vehicles were stopped. In addition to the four Immediate Roadside Sanction (IRS) Fails, police issued seven IRS Cautions for drivers with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.05-0.079, 103 violation tickets, three criminal charges for failing to stop and executed three warrants.

By comparison, 1,250 vehicles were stopped during the 2024 campaign, and police issued 10 IRS Fails, 10 IRS Cautions, two IRS Novice penalties for zero tolerance with a Graduated Driver’s License, 123 violation tickets, five criminal charges and executed six warrants.

“More vehicles were checked this year than last, and there was a 60 per cent reduction in the number of impaired drivers apprehended,” said Sgt. Tony Ramotowski of the Traffic Response Unit. “While enforcement and education efforts will continue, these results are encouraging, and we hope to see this trend continue.”

LPS thanks Alberta Sheriffs and RCMP for their assistance during the campaign as well as volunteers with the Lethbridge and Area chapter of MADD. Police would also like to thank the majority of drivers, who were sober and driving responsibly.

As we all gather with family and friends this holiday season, we reflect on those who may not be with us.
An empty chair at the table, the loss of someone close to you leaves many feeling a void.
May you find comfort and peace knowing your loved one is there with you even though it may be different.
Embrace those with you and share the stories of your loved ones past. They are in our hearts and our thoughts always and throughout the holiday season.
