FNMI Mentorship Program

What is mentorship? It is a supportive relationship between mentor and mentee. Mentorship provides an opportunity for mentees to spend time with positive role models in social activities.

Who can mentor? Indigenous U of L students with approved applications who are able to mentor for a minimum of two semesters.

Who can receive mentorship? Indigenous students, aged 12-17 years of age, enrolled in schools within the city of Lethbridge or from the Blood or Peigan reserves who have parental permission.

How often do we meet? This depends on the type of mentorship one is receiving. Please see additional information below.

How much does it cost? It is absolutely free. The program covers the costs for activities and refreshments.

The program works in two ways, soon to be three:

Youth Mentoring

University of Lethbridge students will be matched with local FNMI Junior and Senior High school youth with a ration of two mentees to one mentor.

Programs will typically run during the University of Lethbridge academic school year (8 months), September through April.

Mentors and mentees will meet 4-6 hours per month.

All mentors must be 18 years of age and older

All mentors will undergo screening measures and are required to provide references. Screening measures include a Police Information Check and a Vulnerable Sector search, as well as a Government of Alberta Intervention Record Check.

Mentors will receive training and support before any mentoring activities can occur, and this support will also continue throughout the duration of the program. All mentors will be required to complete an orientation provided by the University of Lethbridge Risk and Safety Services and specific training by its Counselling Services.

Group Mentoring

Group mentoring is subject to the same as above, however these activities will take place at the university in the evening once a month during the U of L academic year (September-April). Dates will be provided as soon as they become available.

Coming Soon: Peer Mentoring

Peer mentoring for FNMI Uleth students will soon be available. Students in their first year of study will be paired with students in the 3rd year of study or later with the same career interests. This will consist of coffee or lunch meetings to share experiences and offer advice throughout the academic year.
