Chief Mountain (Ninástako) Group Hike #1
Join us as we reconnect with the land, culture, and community through a guided hike to Chief Mountain. These hikes are intended primarily for beginners and First Nations community members who want to build confidence outdoors, learn about the land, and strengthen their connection to our Indigenous ways.
Based on feedback from past participants, many people expressed interest in receiving teachings from an Elder about Chief Mountain and its significance. We are grateful to be able to include an Elder-led information and teaching session this time around.
We have also received permission to access the site for this organized group. This hike is intended for registered participants who have completed the registration process, attended the Elder session, and received the required pre-hike information. We respectfully ask that individuals who are not participating in the program refrain from joining us on the day of the hike or using the group’s scheduled access time to visit the site independently.
This request helps us honour the permissions granted for the group, maintain participant accountability, and ensure everyone’s safety. Multiple groups on the mountain can increase the risk of rockfall, communication difficulties, and emergency response challenges. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
Important Information:
• Attendance at the Elder-led information and teaching session the day before the hike is expected for all participants.
• A meal will be provided during the Elder session as we gather to learn, visit, and prepare for the hike together.
• The first 10 registered participants will receive a small hiking gift.
• Spaces are limited and cannot be held or reserved. If you register and later find that you cannot attend, please let us know as soon as possible so your spot can be offered to someone else.
• If a participant who qualified for the hiking gift cancels, the gift will be offered to the next registered participant based on the order registrations were received to ensure fairness.
• This is a hard, strenuous hike involving steep elevation gain, uneven terrain, and exposure to changing mountain conditions. Participants should be physically prepared and comfortable spending a full day on the mountain.
• Those who choose not to continue to the summit must be comfortable waiting at the base for an extended period of time until the group returns.
• Participants are responsible for arranging their own transportation. A 4x4 or high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended due to road conditions.
• Valid documentation is required to cross the Canada–U.S. border. Please ensure you have the necessary identification before registering.
• Further communication will be provided by text message. Detailed information, reminders, meeting locations, packing recommendations, and final instructions will be sent approximately 3 days before the hike via group text message.
Please note-The majority of our participants are beginners, so we ask experienced hikers to bring patience, encouragement, and a willingness to support others on their journey.
