Hadlie's Bucket List Foundation

Hadlie's Bucket List Foundation Hadlie's Bucket List Foundation is passionate about raising awareness, funding research and supporting local families affected by DIPG.

Hadlie's Bucket List Foundation is the first DIPG foundation in Canada. DIPG is an aggressive brain stem tumour found in children and has a 0% survival rate. Because of its location, not much progress has been made in treating this form of childhood brain cancer. Even a biopsy could be fatal because of the way the cells mingle with healthy cells and among vital centres for breathing and motor cont

rol. Most children live 6-18 months after being diagnosed. Our daughter, Hadlie, lived 10 months and 10 days after she was diagnosed on May 19, 2014, at 3 years old. Our foundation goal is to raise awareness of DIPG, support local families affected by DIPG, as well as raise money to fund research necessary to help understand and better treat this cancer, hopefully one day curing it. We are very excited to begin our foundation at this time, as there are researchers around the world who are making headway. It is motivating us even more to be successful in everything we do. One of our goals is to start a donation program in Edmonton for DIPG tumours. We have been blessed by so many friends, family members and strangers along our journey so far that it has also motivated us to give back as much as we can. Hadlie's joy for life pushes us forward everyday. All money raised will go toward achieving our goals. And we hope to one day start a bucket list program to enable other DIPG kids a chance to check something off of their bucket list.

There was only one photo taken yesterday. To me, that’s a sign of a great day! We did our usual breakfast at IHOP and then went bowling. We had so much fun and came back home to purple cupcakes. It’s so fun to hear your little cousins and brother talk about you like they know you. You, no doubt, would have your learners and be practicing driving. We talked about how we might be preparing to buy you your own car too and I have a feeling you and Kade would be driving around together already in his car. We all miss you so much! Happy birthday, Hadlie! We love you! 💜

This popping up today feels like more than just a coincidence. I went and visited Hadlie’s memorial stone at the cemetery yesterday and have been missing her a little extra lately. Also, it’s birthday month and at this time in 2015 we were preparing to take our last family trip with her to Hawaii. There are still so many ways she is a part of our everyday life, but even having something as simple as this reminder pop up on my feed is a reminder of the good and bad. We’ve missed so much time together, sweet girl, but I’m so glad we made that bucket list and have so many happy memories!

Happy Valentine’s Day! Hadlie has missed out on 10 Valentine’s Days, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t a part of them in our home. We talk about her and include her whenever we talk about how much we love our family. Even if you aren’t a big Valentine’s Day celebrator I hope you still felt loved today!

Have you ever wondered what DIPG means? Here’s a very simple breakdown. I also had no idea how these names came to be when Hadlie was diagnosed. If you have any questions about this type of brain tumor please feel free to ask! I may or may not be able to answer myself, but I can surely find the answer for you. I have spent these years since Hadlie’s been gone, not focused on details, but just grateful for her presence in our lives. A lot of people and pages I follow document and continue to remember dates and procedures and learn terms and treatments, but I’ve found my peace in just remembering our girl. The work that some families are doing is significant and important, however, I know that being consimed by the very thing that killed Hadlie will not serve me well. The memories we made and her personality are far more important to me than using my time and energy on the details. I don’t want to disregard anyone’s path of healing or grief, but if you sometimes wonder why I’m quiet on here it’s because I simply search for peace and find it in those memories of Hadlie.
