Lanark Highlands Plan B

Lanark Highlands Plan B Building a more supportive & inclusive community in Lanark Highlands

If plan a doesn’t work, which it never seems to, go to Plan B. Who is Plan B?

and why do they call themselves that? Plan B began with the Good Food Box and evolved from there. A need was seen to offer low cost fruit and vegetables in the Lanark Highlands, so in partnership with the Lions club in Smiths Falls the Good Food Box programme was initiated in the Village of Lanark. Quickly the orders became too high for transport and a new depot was established in Lanark. It soon

became apparent how wonderful getting the community together for meals would be. We had no idea if this was possible, feasible, or if anyone would come. We decided on a 3 month trial basis beginning March 2015. The dinners have been a huge success. We began to notice a trend in our efforts. If Plan A doesn’t work, which it never seems to, go to Plan B. This seems to be true when approaching the problem from any angle, so we resolved to try Plan B first. We would then proceed through the alphabet until we arrived at whatever it took to get the job done. Plan B became a very loosely organized group of people who took on whatever interested them at the time. There are no prerequisites, and no real commitments, only a desire to be involved. We began to spread our wings a bit and become involved in issues that we felt needed to be addressed. We make no claim to be other than who we are, a grass roots community organization advocating for our community. In June 2015 we sponsored the Perfect Lanark Contest in an effort to hear from our community what they felt needed to be done and what we could do in response to making the Highlands the perfect place to live. We are still working on that! We are actively promoting women’s issues through a variety of mediums and methods and always exploring more innovative and relevant means. We have begun the Jamboree programme which is an exploration of food preservation techniques combined with a distribution of free in season fruit and vegetables. This is a new programme this year and already hugely successful. Inadvertently we have begun an informal network of advocacy. By listening and sharing we have found that the resources and knowledge we have in our midst is phenomenal. Often linking resources to questions within our community leads to solutions we never would have dreamed of

Hello folks, we need help finding someone. Melanie met a person at the dinners who drives to Sudbury every 6 weeks. We've lost the contact information, if anyone knows this person or if YOU are this person please contact Melanie [email protected] or 613-259-5495. Thank you!

Hi all, a few words from Melanie. As Melanie is not a Facebook user, I've passed on all the supportive comments to her by email which made her very happy! Admin (Angie).

"I want to thank everyone for the incredibly kind words and generous support in my retirement. You have all meant a great deal to me, and the journey has been quite the ride. I think it is important to remember that the huge success of Plan B was not because of me, nor the Board of Directors. It was the result of a truly vibrant, wonderful community that has all it needs to carry the success forward.

My coffee pot is always on."

A message from Melanie Mills, our amazing and wonderful leader of Plan B.

"It is with mixed feelings I am contacting you to let you know that Plan B Charitable Community Organization in the Lanark Highlands will be dissolving its status as a charity and closing its doors as an organized community group.

We have been in operation, in some description, in the Lanark Highlands for approximately 12years. These years have been delightful, insightful years and a wonderful journey. Unfortunately, my health no longer permits me to enjoy all that Plan B has to give. On October 21/2024 the Board of Directors unanimously voted for dissolution of the organization.

As a volunteer of Plan B, your contributions enabled so much to be done in our community. “Thank you” isn’t nearly enough to encapsulate the gratitude I feel for the efforts our community has shown in working together to make such an incredible organization. I think it is important to remember that Plan B never had an end goal. Our mission was always “Towards an even more supportive and inclusive community.”

The structure of Plan B got it started, but it was always the community who did it. Plan B was never more than a tiny group of people trying to stay organized. It was everyone else who participated on some level, whether they sat on the board or simply attended meals, that made the mission happen. It is the people of the Highlands who are working towards an even more supportive and inclusive community every day.

Plan B perhaps drew a framework for others to follow and head in their own directions. I look forward to participating in the new projects that follow, lead by new leaders and new challenges. Our community has proven how powerful and capable it really is, and it can only be that way because the individuals within it are powerful and capable themselves."

A very, very Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. The list of things we have to be grateful for are long, and ideally, the overflow is shared with others whose lists are not quite as bountiful.
This time of year encourages us to be particularly aware of all of the gifts, privileges, wonders in our lives and reflect on how they have supported us throughout the year. It is so easy to focus on the downsides, easy for all of us. That is a dark and gloomy road leading nowhere good.

Please join us for dinner on Monday, Thanksgiving Day, to celebrate everything wonderful in our community, most especially the gratitude we share for each other. For each member of our community and for what they bring to the whole. On behalf of the Board of Directors of Plan B, thank you for letting us into your lives.

On a sadder note, for a number of reasons, the dance on October 25th is being cancelled. Our apologies.

It is an all hands on deck event!

The harvest season is drawing to an end, and (like happens to us every year) we didn’t keep up very well. Some produce has been frozen to enable us to do a bit later. Well, Now is the time.

We will be getting fresh cabbage to make sauerkraut on Monday at 9 and will be canning the rest of the week as well. Recently we have been given 128 pounds of strawberries that will be processed as well as some other fruits.

This is a combination of our regular Jamboree, come to can for your larder, and Help!

Our freezers are full and we will be needing them.

Every day from Sept 23-27 will be a hive of activity!

Everyone welcome, please let us know if and when you are able to help out.

All events at 61 Owen Street, Lanark Village!

Please email [email protected] or call 613-259-5495 for more information 🤩

Stay tuned for exciting details about our Hallowe’en dance on October 25th with daytime events for the kids. Save the date!!
