đšNorth Parkâs âTiny Townâ homeless facility could be headed to another municipality as Victoria readies to declare its shelter services âfullâđš
In a Friday night Ask Me Anything event held on VibrantVictoria with Victoria Councillor Jeremy Carradonna, news that a motion is expected to be brought forward at City Hall relating to the future location of North Parkâs âTiny Townâ homeless housing project caught the attention of Colwood Councillor Ian Ward.
Councillor Caradonna, answering a question regarding induced homelessness in the region, said a plan is afoot to put forward a motion asking another municipality to make a big step on Tiny Town, and that Victoria was nearing a point where it will declare itself âfullâ on housing for homeless persons.
âAt the CRD, I have been pushing the region to get more involved in doing their part, and that work is now underway. I also think we're inching closer to declaring ourselves âfull.â We simply cannot do it all. In a few weeks, I will be bringing a motion to Council to request neighbouring jurisdictions to take on hosting Tiny Town,â Caradonna wrote, as part of his response to the question.
In turn, Colwood Councillor Ward asked Caradonna to elaborate.
âHow do you justify pawning your problems off on us when it was your political allies who openly issued an invitation to create the mess Victoria is in today (Lisa Helps),â Ward wrote.
In response to Ward, Caradonna said:
âThe Province, whether people like it or not (I like it) handed down supportive housing targets to pretty much every CRD jurisdiction. The target for Colwood is 17 units. Tiny Town is 30 units, so by accepting it, you would meet and exceed your targets, and unlike most BC Housing projects, where [Local Governments] have no say in where the supportive housing goes, Tiny Town is unique in that a LG has a lot of say over where it goes.â
