The government’s decision to revisit how military honours like the Victoria Cross are awarded to Afghanistan Veterans, is the right one. We commend the decision to establish an independent review board and salute the groups and individuals who have been pressing for this sort of outcome for years. The Legion itself has advocated publicly and behind the scenes on this matter and we’re pleased to see this development. We hope this eventually results in deserving individuals such as the late Pte. Jess Larochelle being awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery in Afghanistan.

La décision du gouvernement de revoir la manière dont les distinctions militaires comme la Croix de Victoria sont attribuées aux vétérans d’Afghanistan est la bonne. Nous saluons la décision de créer un conseil d'examen indépendant, et nous rendons hommage aux groupes et aux individus qui ont milité pour ce type de résultat pendant des années. La Légion elle-même a plaidé publiquement et en coulisses sur cette question et nous sommes heureux de voir ce développement. Nous espérons que cela aboutira finalement à ce que des personnes méritantes comme le défunt soldat Jess Larochelle reçoivent la Croix de Victoria pour son courage en Afghanistan.

Le 29 mai 1926, le premier insigne de la Légion, réalisé, dit-on, en or du Manitoba, fut présenté au gouverneur général, Lord Byng de Vimy. Son dessin est demeuré pratiquement inchangé, devenant un symbole durable de l’identité de la Légion et de son engagement envers les vétérans, le Souvenir et le service communautaire.

On May 29, 1926, the first Legion badge, said to be made from Manitoba gold, was presented to the Governor General, Lord Byng of Vimy. Its design has remained largely unchanged, becoming a lasting symbol of the Legion’s identity and commitment to Veterans, Remembrance, and community service

Aujourd'hui, le 28 mai, marque une date historique au Canada. Il y a vingt-six ans, jour pour jour, la dépouille du Soldat inconnu était transportée par avion à Ottawa pour être inhumée au Monument commémoratif de guerre du Canada.

Un tombeau abritant la dépouille d'un soldat inconnu a été ajouté au Monument commémoratif de guerre du Canada en 2000, aboutissement d'un projet initié par la Légion royale canadienne. Depuis 2007, les Forces armées canadiennes y déploient des sentinelles, ainsi qu'au Monument commémoratif de guerre du Canada, d'avril à novembre.

Ce tombeau rend hommage aux quelque 116 000 Canadiens morts au combat, ainsi qu'à tous les membres des Forces armées canadiennes – de toutes les branches – morts ou susceptibles de mourir dans tous les conflits, passés, présents et futurs.

Today, May 28, marks a historic date for Canada. Twenty-six years ago to the day, the remains of the Unknown Soldier were flown to Ottawa for interment at the National War Memorial.

A tomb housing the remains of an unknown soldier was added to the National War Memorial in 2000, the culmination of a project initiated by the Royal Canadian Legion. Since 2007, the Canadian Armed Forces have maintained a sentry presence at the tomb, as well as at the National War Memorial, from April to November.

This tomb honours the approximately 116,000 Canadians who have died in combat, as well as all members of the Canadian Armed Forces—from all branches—who have died or may die in all conflicts, past, present, and future.

HAPPY ARTILLERY DAY!!
Artillery day is celebrated annually on the 26th of May. In 1952, the Colonel Commandant, Major-General H.O.N. Brownfield, sought and received permission to adopt the Royal Artillery birthdate (26 May 1716) as Artillery Day for The Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery. As such, Artillery Day is symbolic of the close fraternal relationship that exists between Commonwealth regiments of artillery. On this occasion the Colonel Commandant, on behalf of The Royal Regiment, extends Loyal Greetings to the Captain General. Artillery Day may be celebrated with special parades, historical presentations, sports days, guest nights, parties, open houses, and the like.

La Journée de l'Artillerie est célébrée chaque année le 26 mai. En 1952, le colonel commandant, le major-général H.O.N. Brownfield, a demandé et obtenu l'autorisation d'adopter la date de fondation de l'Artillerie royale (26 mai 1716) comme Journée de l'Artillerie pour le Régiment royal d'Artillerie canadienne. Ainsi, la Journée de l'Artillerie symbolise les liens fraternels étroits qui unissent les régiments d'artillerie du Commonwealth. À cette occasion, le colonel commandant, au nom du Régiment royal, adresse ses salutations les plus chaleureuses au capitaine général. La Journée de l'Artillerie peut être célébrée par des défilés spéciaux, des présentations historiques, des journées sportives, des soirées de réception, des fêtes, des journées portes ouvertes, etc.
