🔴 Stronger Protections for BC Firefighters — Eight New Cancers Added to Presumptive Coverage
The Government of British Columbia, in partnership with the BC Professional Fire Fighters' Association (BCPFFA), has expanded presumptive cancer coverage for firefighters under the Workers' Compensation Act.
Effective 2026, eight additional cancers are now recognized as occupationally linked to firefighting:
🔹 Tracheal, Bronchial, Laryngeal, Nasal, and Pharyngeal cancers
🔹 Skin Cancer
🔹 Mesothelioma
🔹 Soft Tissue Sarcoma
The province has also reduced the cumulative service-year requirement for esophageal cancer coverage from 20 years to 15 — bringing BC in line with Ontario and the national standard.
These changes reflect decades of scientific research into the occupational cancer risks firefighters face every day — from toxic smoke inhalation to chemical absorption through gear. This is now the strongest set of firefighter cancer protections in Canada.
Kitimat Firefighters thanks Premier David Eby, Minister of Labour Jennifer Whiteside, the BCPFFA, and all Members of the Legislative Assembly for their continued commitment to the health and safety of BC's firefighters and first responders.
The fight against occupational cancer doesn't end here — but this is a significant step forward.
