Do the wonderful folks of Waterloo Region know their options for gender-affirming care? Let’s find out! 🌈✨

Last Saturday, we caught up with the community at TriPride - Waterloo Region’s annual 2SLGBTQIA+ Pride event - to chat about the importance of affirming and inclusive healthcare. Part two coming soon! 😉

Which community event(s) should Maddie (and the bin of things) come out to next?

It’s officially June, or as we know it: Pride and Indigenous History Month! 🌈🪶

This month, we’ll be sharing the stories and legacies of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit change-makers, 2SLGBTQIA+ trailblazers, and Indigequeer icons who’ve helped shape the landscape of s*xual and reproductive justice.

Today is Red Dress Day, the Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People ❤️🪶

In 2019, Canada’s National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) concluded that the staggering rates of violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people constitute a “Canadian genocide”. Since then, hundreds more have been reported missing or found murdered.

This guide to understanding the epidemic of MMIWG2S relies on the real stories and faces of victims. The majority of these cases remain unsolved, with countless communities and families still searching for answers and justice.

Today, and always, we stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities, and women, girls, and two-spirit people everywhere.

Over the last two years, we’ve witnessed moments of joy, vulnerability, transition, grief, celebration, fear, confidence, and connection. We’ve had the privilege of walking alongside people as they accessed care that should have always been available to them.

To every patient who trusted us with their care: thank you.

To every staff member, provider, advocate, and community member who helped build this program: thank you.

And to trans, nonbinary, and gender-diverse people everywhere: you deserve care that honours your humanity, your autonomy, and your future.

Two years in, and we’re just getting started 🏳️‍⚧️

Medical environments place patients in deeply vulnerable positions.

We’re taught to trust providers, to follow instructions, and to assume that discomfort, embarrassment, or confusion are simply part of receiving care. That power imbalance can make it incredibly difficult to recognize when a boundary has been crossed, or to speak up if something feels wrong.

The recent acquittal of former Kitchener neurologist Jeffrey Sloka has left many community members feeling shaken, angry, fearful, and uncertain. While court decisions determine legal outcomes, they do not determine what harm was experienced.

We believe survivors, and know that all people deserve care that is consensual, transparent, and safe 💜

When people think of “admin work” in healthcare, they usually think phones and paperwork. But in reality…

Admin professionals are the ones helping patients navigate care, making complicated systems feel a little more human, and keeping everything moving behind the scenes (often all at once!)

At SHORE, our admin team does everything from booking ultrasounds to supporting patients through forms, questions, and moments of real vulnerability.

Today (and every day), we’re so grateful for admin professionals - in our clinic and everywhere - who make healthcare more accessible, compassionate, and human.
