National Human Trafficking Awareness Day is today, February 22. It was officially recognized by the Government of Canada in 2007 and provides an opportunity to educate the public on the realities of modern-day slavery, highlighting that it occurs, including right here in the Waterloo Region, and to spur action to fight it. It also serves as a call to pause, to honour victims, and to learn to recognize the signs of forced labour and sexual exploitation.
Waterloo Regional Police Service has partnered with the Not In My City campaign, an initiative focused on raising awareness and helping communities recognize and prevent human trafficking. Residents and organizations can learn more by taking a brief online course designed to support early recognition and action.
If you or someone you know needs support, the Canadian Human Trafficking Hotline is available 24/7 at 1‑833‑900‑1010 or by chat at CanadianHumanTraffickingHotline.ca. Free, confidential support is offered in more than 200 languages. Resources and more information are available at EndTrafficking.ca and notinmycity.ca.
