Team work makes the dream work!

What do you do when one of your teammates isn't available for a group shot? Use a photo on a phone, of course!

The story behind this photo, and how we got to this moment, still makes us all laugh. The group just kept growing....

Behind the laughs is an incredible team working together to support ILWR's Attendant Services. From scheduling and supervising services to supporting our Attendants and working alongside Consumers, there are many people behind the scenes helping make independent living possible.

ILWR's Attendant Services provide assistance with personal care activities, supporting adults with physical disabilities to live full, active and independent lives. Services can be provided at home, at work, at school or in the community, depending on the program and individual needs.

This is just part of our amazing Attendant Services administrative team. And apparently, when it comes to a group photo, nobody gets left behind. ❤

Looking for a little sunshine this winter?

Our friends at KW AccessAbility are booking their upcoming 7-Day Caribbean Cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line.

The cruise takes place February 26 to March 5, 2027, with stops in the Caribbean and plenty of opportunity to enjoy some time in the sun.

We’re pleased to share that Independent Living Waterloo Region has received funding from Enbridge Gas to support the continued growth of our Youth in Motion program.

Youth in Motion (YIM) is a peer-focused program that creates opportunities for youth and young adults with disabilities to connect, build relationships, develop skills and explore new experiences in an inclusive and supportive environment. Through monthly meet-ups and an annual youth retreat, participants have opportunities to try new activities, share ideas, and build confidence.

What a weekend at the annual Youth in Motion Summer Retreat!

We spent the tropical-themed weekend making memories, trying new things and dreaming up what’s next for Youth in Motion.

ILWR Achieves Accreditation Canada Qmentum Accreditation

ILWR is proud to announce that, after two years of dedication following our successful Primer survey, we have achieved full accreditation through the Accreditation Canada Qmentum program.

This milestone recognizes that ILWR meets rigorous national standards in key areas, including Governance, Leadership, Infection Prevention and Control, Medication Management, Home Support, and Service Excellence.

Achieving accreditation reflects our ongoing commitment to providing safe, high-quality, and person-centred services. It would not have been possible without the invaluable contributions of our Consumers, Employees, Board of Directors, and community partners.

What does it mean to stay independent as we age?

Our Direct Funding team recently hosted “From Passenger to Driver's Seat”, an engaging workshop with a local seniors’ group to explore how people can continue to live independently and age at home.

We talked about options, resources, and the importance of having choice and control in planning for the future.

Aging at home looks different for everyone, and knowing what supports are available can make all the difference.

The Grand River Accessibility Advisory Committee (GRAAC) is an advisory committee of Council made up of community members with disabilities, as well as those who serve and support people with disabilities. Under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA), municipalities with 10,000 or more residents must have an accessibility advisory committee to advise municipal staff and council on matters of accessibility.

For more than 20 years, GRAAC has served the Region of Waterloo and participating municipalities, providing advice and recommendations to help advance accessibility across the region. As participating municipalities review and update their governance arrangements, the structure of GRAAC is changing. These changes present an opportunity to refresh the committee while adapting to a new regional structure. Accessible services and opportunities are priorities for the Region and City of Waterloo. GRAAC remains important to these efforts.

In the Fall, GRAAC will undergo changes to its membership and governance structure, with the Region of Waterloo and City of Waterloo taking the lead in administration and governance of the committee. GRAAC will continue to play an important role in municipal accessibility, focusing its efforts on accessibility work at the Region and City of Waterloo. We are inviting feedback from people with disabilities and their support networks as we work to build a new model for the committee. Last week our ILWR community came together for our Annual Summer Picnic, with almost 100 staff, Consumers, and family members joining us for an afternoon of food, fun, and connection.

One of the highlights of the day was taking a group photo together, capturing the amazing community that makes ILWR such a special place. It was also an opportunity to recognize and celebrate team members who have reached important service milestones. Their dedication, compassion, and commitment have helped countless people live life their way over the years.
