Mission Monarch Update 🦋✨

So far this season we've had over 80 caterpillars in our monarch house!! Most of them are now in chrysalis, with a few that emerged early last week. We were able to tag, measure, sample, and release four butterflies already!

Many of our chrysalis' are turning dark, so we are eagerly waiting for them to emerge. 💚🦋

Brushmats along the Dunk River! 🌿💦

BBEMA staff has been hard at work making brushmats in the southwest branch of the Dunk River. A brushmat is a layer of tree cuttings that are placed and secured along a stream to help catch sediment and protect the bank. Stabilizing and rebuilding our stream banks is important for combatting erosion and improving stream flow! ✨

We have officially started our eelgrass surveys for the summer! 🌱✨

🌱 Eelgrass is a very important indicator to the health of our coastal shorelines. Among other things, it provides habitat for ocean critters, stabilizes the seafloor, and helps oxygenate the water. By monitoring this underwater species every year, we're able to keep track of any changes in our ocean!

Staff got to participate in some bat monitoring last week! 🦇

Bats are super vital to our biodiversity because they are a great natural pest control. Unfortunately, native bat populations in Atlantic Canada have been decreasing due to white-nose syndrome, and it can be particularly challenging to monitor them, as they are nocturnal and they hibernate during the winter.

The Kensington SEAM program joined us last Friday for some stream and riparian zone enhancement! 💦🌲

This amazing group of volunteers helped us remove trash from the Lefurgey stream in Summerside, and plant around 60 trees along the riparian zone. Go SEAM!

We would also like to thank The City of Summerside for coming out and helping us remove some of the heavier debris, and the PEI Wildlife Conservation Fund for funding our conservation efforts!✨

Last Tuesday we spent most of the day removing invasive nightshade along the Lefurgey stream in Summerside. We cleared 470 pounds which adds to our total of 675 pounds of invasive species removed this summer!

🌿 Bittersweet nightshade is an invasive plant that thrives in riparian zones. It is a dense, shade tolerant, fast spreading vine that can quickly choke out a stream, reducing flow rate and fish passage. Nightshade removal, along with other invasive species, is one of our main conservation projects at BBEMA.
