"Point Pelee Shipwrecks"

KHSA Meeting Monday March 9, 2026
First Baptist Church, Kingsville at 2 PM.
Everyone Welcome!

Lake Erie's most treacherous hazard to navigation is Point Pelee, where hundreds of ships have been damaged and lost. Learn about the early, tragic wrecks of the paddle wheelers, Kent and Northern Indiana; the excellently preserved schooner named the Willis, sunk in an 1872 collision; the ship named the Little Wissahickon, wrecked in 1896 with three lives lost; daring rescues and heart-breaking failures, such as the steamers George Stone, the Clarion, and the N. J. Nessen; details of the Conemaugh, the closest shipwreck to the actual point of land; the controversial 1980s anchor theft from the 1905 wreck of the schooner-barge.

Looking forward to Bob’s newest book. Launch on Sunday Feb. 8th.

A formal dedication was held Jan. 3, 2026 at four local cemeteries where some of the first United Empire Loyalist settlers are buried. The Essex Branch of UEL arranged for special plaques to be installed at each cemetery and a brief history of the founding Loyalist family was read to the assembled audience. After travelling to the McCormick Family Cemetery, the Quick Family Cemetery, the Huffman Family Cemetery and the Tofflemire-Snider Family Cemetery, guests were invited to the Fruit Wagon for refreshments. A great lesson in pioneer history.
