H'art Centre

H'art Centre Supporting people with disabilities in the arts. Join us & create a vibrant community. It is a place where anything creative can happen.

H’art Centre is an award-winning, accessible arts hub where people with disabilities and those facing barriers can study, enjoy and produce works in the arts throughout their lives. It strives to be a leader in the Disability Arts movement and it champions accessibility, indirect learning, understanding, public engagement, and community collaboration. We offer the following programs:

H'ART STUDIO

We deliver a high-quality arts program for adults with developmental disabilities. It offers visual arts, theatre, dance, music, media arts, and literary arts workshops and the opportunity to create alongside qualified instructors and professional artists. THE BOX
We provide access to the performing arts to those facing barriers through THE BOX, a 3,500 square foot accessible performing arts space. We support, promote and advance a diverse and inclusive population within accessible performing arts experiences. Home to Able Artists, an ongoing series of workshops by professional Canadian artists with disabilities and leaders in the inclusive arts field. THE MIX
THE MIX is a warm and welcoming 4,000 square foot space where people with disabilities, people who are D/deaf, MixAbilities-trained artist facilitators, and inclusive arts groups learn, develop, rehearse, exhibit, and collaborate. With this new space, we bring inclusive theatre groups together for residencies and offer on-site community outreach workshops. The Mix is an incubator for new inclusive arts leaders, accelerating positive change in Kingston and beyond. We offer our award-winning inclusive arts training program, MixAbilities, in The Mix. It gives volunteers, artists, and arts educators unique access to our inclusive arts facilitation techniques. We reach out so people of diverse abilities can participate in the arts throughout their lives and as they age. H’art Centre’s newest initiative takes a community arts outreach approach to ensure all people have access to meaningful arts-based programming.

A quiet moment at the end of installation yesterday evening. Thank you to everyone who helped bring H'artists' work into the community space—we're excited to share it as the Skeleton Park Arts Fest opens tomorrow.

Until then, check out the SPAF lineup: www.skeletonparkartsfest.ca

Before we start installing this week… a little behind-the-scenes peek. ✨🎨

Soon, this will become part of our exhibition featuring H'artists’ creative work at this year’s Skeleton Park Arts Fest.

We’re also proud to be partnering with the festival and Creative Connector to co-present 'InterComplementary Journeys' led by Erin Ball and Maxime Beauregard, as part of this year’s lineup.

Just some of the people and partnerships bringing our summer to life and taking it beyond the Studio, with support from the volunteers, donors, and partners.

Thanks to City of Kingston - Municipal Government, the Harry E. Foster Foundation, Community Foundation for Kingston & Area for making our summer possible—and to the Anna & Edward C. Churchill Foundation for supporting MixAbilities training outreach.

More to come as everything starts to take shape. 💛

Until then, check out the lineup!

A little side project alongside our Skeleton Park Arts Fest exhibit work 🎪

The birdhouses have been sanded, primed, and are now being brought to life with drawings and colour. Some are leaning into our circus theme, others are taking their own creative direction.

They’ll be installed in the big tree near the Providence Village west wing once complete — a small but lively addition to our summer program.

And don't forget to check out Skeleton Park Arts Fest exhibit June 19-21!

We’re excited to be part of Skeleton Park Arts Fest this summer, sharing the circus arts-inspired collaborative exhibit we’ve been shaping together in the Studio. It’s a joy to be in this festival community, and we can’t wait to see it come to life.
Mark your calendars!
June 19-21.

Summer is already unfolding, and people are beginning to explore in the studio in their own ways. Throughout May, our circus arts–inspired workshops were filled with movement, creativity, laughter, and moments of discovery. As H'artists explored new skills and connected with one another, we were reminded why this work matters: creating spaces where people can build confidence, express themselves, and experience the joy of learning together.

People find their way into our H'art community in all kinds of ways.

Some come for the inclusive arts workshops. Some come to create with friends. Some are looking for a new challenge, a creative outlet, or simply a chance to try something new.

This summer, we're exploring a circus-inspired theme—but no matter what theme brings you here, there's no single way in.

And that's what we love about this community.

A while ago, Brooke was developing her creative work.

Now her artwork is on the cover of the current edition of ADDed magazine, published by the Add*ed Research Group (Add Ed) at Queen's University and focused on research, innovation, and inclusive education.

It’s pretty amazing to see where creativity and confidence can take someone over time.
Congratulations, Brooke! ✨

This summer, we’re bringing our Circus of Dreams art work to the Skeleton Park Arts Fest — in true circus arts style.

It’s a chance for H'artists to create together and bring their ideas and work into public space as part of a living festival environment.

Here’s what’s coming together through this collaboration:

-An ongoing outdoor installation developed by H'art Studio artists will be featured at the southeast corner of the festival
-We’re running MixAbilities Inclusive Arts training for festival volunteers and community members in early June, helping support inclusive practices
- InterComplementary Journeys will perform, co-presented by H'art Centre and Creative Connector, in the festival's lineup.

Just some of the people and partnerships that will bring our summer to life and take it out of the studio.
