Today we are highlighting Richard for Disability Employment Awareness Month! Richard has been delivering fliers for over 9 years!

Richard - I enjoy meeting new people, and getting stuff from the people I deliver papers to. Customers are always giving me treats and money on Christmas as a "thank-you" for delivering their papers. It makes me feel wanted actually. To be successful at this job I had to learn who to deliver the papers to, and who not to. You get a map and you have to figure it out from there.

The Independent - Richard is one of our top employees. His communication skills are top notch. He responds promptly and follows the directions given. Richard has been an employee for The Independent Plus for over 10 years, and through that time her has shown that his reliability as an employee is above grade. The Independent Plus is vital on accuracy to our customers and Richard is bang on every week. As a company the bottom line is having employees who do not need to be micro-managed. Richard knows his job inside out and completes it weekly independently with zero issues. Inclusive hiring has many benefits. Just to name a few, long-term employees, giving everyone in the community a chance to contribute and and gaining an overall great worker.

Today we are showcasing Wayne and his work at Home Hardware for Disability Employment Awareness Month!

Wayne - I like everything, my job, the people. The staff are good to people. It’s a good job I’ve been there a long-time. I have learned how to keep the store clean. The benefits of working are that it helps with your independence, keeps you busy and out of trouble! It also puts money in your bank account and you can buy groceries with it!

Melanie Pyke - Owner
Wayne joined the Kincardine Home Hardware team in 1985, and over the last 41 years he has truly become part of our store ‘family’.
He is loyal and reliable and takes great pride in his work. He is also cheerful, kind, and courteous to his colleagues and our customers alike, and has helped to support the positive and neighbourly feel we aspire to uphold at our store. Wayne contributes to our workplace in many ways, but one of the more notable and unforeseen benefits of having him as an employee is how he provides our team with a perspective that may otherwise be overlooked. Having Wayne as part of our team has helped support the opinion that bringing people together with different strengths, abilities, and ways of doing things only makes the workplace better. Having him on our team reminds us that every employee, when given the opportunity, has something valuable to contribute, and this has helped to promote a work environment where inclusion is simply a part of who we are and how we work together.

We would encourage other employers to be open to inclusive hiring. Don’t focus on what someone may or may not be able to do – take the time to discover what they can do, and where their strengths can contribute to your business. Sometimes that means making small adjustments or approaching training differently, but that is true of many employees. When you find the right role for the right person, the benefits go far beyond simply filling a position. Wayne has been with us for many years, and we are very glad we gave each other that opportunity.

Today we are celebrating Dylan for Disability Employment Awareness Month!

Dylan:
I enjoyed getting a lot of help from Merisa and Janelle. They were very supportive and gave me the scoop on how the program worked. I've been enjoying thinking about how I can make a fortune because I haven't seen a lot of other natural food colouring businesses in Ontario. Making the colour tests has been a lot of fun too. There are a lot of steps to launching and leading a business! It was good to work with experienced people. I learned that it's a lot of trial and error too. I'd tell them it's a good opportunity to get help from people who are experienced in new businesses. I would tell them to definitely try and get into the program because it's important to get help when you're trying to start your own business.

Jenelle Bannon, Business Development Coordinator - Bruce County
What I valued the most about having Dylan as a part of the Summer Company program was his enthusiasm, positivity, and willingness to learn. It was great to have Dylan in the program! He demonstrated great work ethic, interest and engagement, and a genuine commitment to learning. Dylan’s positivity brought great energy to the group activities and he helped create an environment where students felt comfortable sharing ideas and learning from one another. Inclusive hiring is important because potential is only realized when there is an opportunity to show it. Working with Dylan reinforced to me how important it is to see what people can do rather than making assumptions about what they can’t.
