💦 The rich history of Miȼ̓qaqas ʔakinmit̓uq (the Columbia River in the Ktunaxa language) and its tributaries has long connected Indigenous Peoples through vital travel routes, used by canoe in summer and across ice in winter.

🛶 Follow the journey through the Birthplace of Adventure, from the Columbia River Headwaters in Canal Flats through Fairmont Hot Springs, Windermere, Invermere, and Radium Hot Springs, as the river continues to Castlegar and flows southwest to the Pacific Ocean.

✨ Adventure is calling ! ✨

We found one of BC’s most unforgettable family adventures at the Golden Skybridge in Golden, BC 🏔️ Walking high above the canyon with mountain views all around was a mix of “WOW” and a little bit of “are we really this high?!” 😄 The bridges, waterfalls, forest trails, and epic scenery make this a must-stop for families who love exploring the outdoors.

Introducing Jared Basil from Creston, BC a member of the Ktunaxa Nation, and one of our Kootenay Legends in the Birthplace of Adventure.⁣
⁣⁣
⁣Jared steps into an expression of natural legacy of a traditional current. Adorned in Indigenous regalia, he becomes both storyteller and song. The wind becomes breath, the earth becomes drum and the sky becomes witness. Each gesture is a connection - to land, to culture, to community.⁣

✅ Sustainable travel is about more than where you go, it’s about the impact you leave behind. It’s about destinations that thoughtfully balance a thriving local economy, vibrant culture, strong communities, and a protected natural environment so future generations can enjoy them too. And when a place earns a trusted third-party certification, it’s more than a label - it’s proof of real commitment.

Together with our regional tourism partners, we offer the expertise and guidance you need to successfully achieve certification and strengthen your sustainability practices. Learn more about assistance with certifications: https://www.krtourism.ca/certifcations/

Hidden among Trail’s hillsides are dozens of covered stairways - a unique piece of the city’s history. Built to connect neighbourhoods, workplaces, and everyday life, these steps reflect Trail’s industrial roots and the resilience of a community built vertically. Today, they stand as cultural landmarks and a reminder of the creativity that shaped this mountain 🏔️ valley community!

Canada’s first outdoor gear repair and advanced manufacturing centre is coming to the Kootenays.

The Kootenay Outdoor Recreation Enterprise (KORE) and College of the Rockies are launching the Rehub Circular Technology Centre - a first-of-its-kind hub designed to keep outdoor gear in use longer, grow rural manufacturing, train the next generation of skilled workers and drive circular economy innovation across BC.

The groundbreaking project is receiving $1 million in provincial support through the Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program, helping position the Kootenays as a leader in sustainable outdoor industry solutions.
