Last weekend took us aboard the Queen Mary for the third annual Titanic Anniversary Weekend — celebrating history, aesthetics, and a touch of maritime fantasy.

Four days packed with Titanic enthusiasts young and old, familiar faces from past events, actors, historians, content creators, descendants of survivors, and even the painter who helped define the legend. ✨

Already excited to see what shenanigans, soirées, and cocktail‑hour aftermath unfold next year. Until next year,

The Queen Mary ⚓️

The Queen Mary in Long Beach stands as one of the world’s most iconic ocean liners, preserved as a floating hotel and historical landmark. Its Art Deco design and maritime legacy make it a signature piece of California’s coastal heritage.

She served for 31 years, from 1936 to 1967, operating primarily on the North Atlantic route between Southampton, Cherbourg, and New York.

The Queen Mary 2 (QM2) carries 22 lifeboats plus additional tenders and rescue craft, each designed to hold around 150 people. They are advanced, enclosed survival craft built to SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) standards.

Deployment: Mounted along the promenade deck, visible from the exterior. They use gravity davits for rapid launch in emergencies.

Modern enclosed lifeboats for large cruise ships generally cost $1–2 million each.

QM2 Radar Scanners 📡

The spinning motion ensures the radar beam scans the entire horizon, updating the ship’s situational awareness every few seconds. This is critical for safe navigation, especially in fog, at night, or in busy shipping lanes.

Step into the Britannia Restaurant—a two‑deck grand dining room seating over 1,000 guests. With sweeping staircases, elegant white‑gloved service, and five‑course menus that change daily. From breakfast classics to gala‑night feasts, it’s the heart of the Queen Mary 2 experience.

The name “Britannia” ties back to Cunard’s heritage, symbolizing British pride and the ceremonial nature of dining at sea.

Queen Mary 2’s Bell 🔔

A timeless link to Cunard’s maritime tradition — every ship carries one. Engraved with Queen Mary 2 and her launch year (2003), this bell no longer marks daily time but still rings out on special occasions like christenings and memorials.

This bell is found in its glass case on the forward open deck near the bow, it’s a heritage piece for all to admire during a promenade walk — a living symbol of ocean liner history.

Remembering Ellen

I had the privilege of meeting Ellen at the Titanic Anniversary Weekend aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach this past April, held to mark the 113th anniversary of the Titanic’s sinking. Ellen, who appeared as a background actor in Titanic, carried herself with warmth and quiet pride in being part of the film’s legacy.

In 2022, she was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. Despite the challenges, she faced her illness with remarkable strength and grace. Sadly, Ellen passed away this past weekend. Her resilience and her connection to Titanic’s story will not be forgotten.

Rest peacefully, Ellen — your legacy sails on with Titanic history and with all who had the honour of meeting you.

Our deepest condolences go out to Judy, her close friend and fellow background actor, to Ellen’s family, and to the many friends she touched within the Titanic community.

I met Ellen on the Queen Mary during the Titanic anniversary weekend last April, and we quickly became friends. You may recognize her as the frozen mother holding her baby in the 1997 Titanic film. Over the years, Ellen has bravely faced her battle with cancer, and she’s now confronting her biggest challenge yet.

Her family is doing everything they can to keep her at home, but they need some support. If you’re able, please consider donating — the GoFundMe link is in my bio. Thank you.

The Queen Mary 2 carries spare propeller blades at the bow, ready for use in emergencies. Displayed prominently on the foredeck, these gleaming structures are affectionately nicknamed “Captain’s cufflinks.” Beyond their practical purpose, they stand as a symbol of the ship’s engineering strength and maritime tradition.

The Queen Mary 2 (QM2)

Is the world’s last true ocean liner — built for speed, elegance, and transatlantic crossings. She’s not just a ship; she’s a floating legacy of Cunard maritime history.

We recently did a transatlantic crossing from Southampton to New York across the North Atlantic aboard her. It took 7 days and she cruised at an average speed of 22 knots.

QM2 is powered by four Rolls‑Royce Mermaid pods — two fixed and two azimuthing that rotate 360° to steer the ship without rudders. Together they deliver 96 MW of propulsion power (128,740 horsepower), driving the stainless‑steel propellers which measure 6 metres across. Each pod weighs 260 tonnes, and spare blades can be seen on Deck 7.

For manoeuvring, she also has three Rolls‑Royce bow thrusters, giving her the agility to dock without tug assistance.

All systems are fed by four diesel generators and two gas turbines, producing 117 MW (157,000 horsepower) — a design made for the conditions of the Atlantic.
