Apple blossoms are in full bloom across the Valley, and behind the beauty is an important time for Nova Scotia growers. 🌸🐝As bees get busy moving from blossom to blossom, the work happening in our orchards today helps lay the foundation for this year's apple crop. Every blossom represents the beginning of a journey from orchard to harvest, made possible through the dedication and hard work of local growers.

The 2025 drought highlighted a growing reality for Nova Scotia agriculture: rainfall alone is no longer enough to ensure a reliable water supply for crops. Farmers across the province are investing in irrigation and water management systems to build resilience and protect future food production. Supporting sustainable water solutions will be critical for the future of farming in Nova Scotia.

After a harsh growing season in 2025 due to severe drought, more Nova Scotia farmers are investing in irrigation equipment to ensure their crops can survive extreme weather events.

🍎 NSFGA Executive Director Emily Lutz and Minister Greg Morrow were at The Station Food Hub in Newport Station yesterday to share exciting news for Nova Scotia’s apple industry and local communities.

With funding from the provincial Department of Agriculture, The Station Food Hub has introduced new slicing and packaging equipment — boosting production from 30 to up to 300 cases per day. Each case provides about 180 servings, greatly increasing access to fresh, locally grown apple slices.

Emily Lutz highlighted the importance of secondary markets for apple growers, allowing “imperfect” apples that don’t meet grocery-store standards to be transformed into products such as fresh apple slices. Bringing more Nova Scotia apples into schools and care settings means healthier, convenient snack options for students, patients, and residents.

Nova Scotia is using local apples for school and hospital meals.

A new apple slicer and processing line is now operating at The Station Food Hub Company in Newport Station, Hants County! It is exciting to have more local processing opportunitites for Nova Scotia apples. It was great to tour the facility this morning and see just how incredible this system is.

Keep your eyes open for local apples in schools and hospitals near you!

There’s rarely a quiet moment for fruit growers in the Valley—preparations for the next growing season are already in full swing.

Thank you to all the growers who made time to attend Day 1 of the Spring Workshop. It was an incredible turnout, with every seat filled. These sessions and speaker panels provide valuable opportunities to learn, connect, and share knowledge.

A sincere thank you as well to our speakers and panelists for sharing their insights with the group.

Thank you to Kings West MLA Chris Palmer for inviting the NSFGA and several farmers from Kings West to be acknowledged in the legislature today.

Nova Scotian growers produce world-class apples and it's a privilege to be recognized for this work. We appreciate the kind words relating to our contributions to the province's economy, the history and tradition in fruit growing, and the way our industry contributes to the fabric and landscape of Nova Scotia. 🍎🍎🍎
