The first day of school is a BIG day! Even when a child has had a positive experience, all of the new people, routines, expectations, sounds and emotions can be a lot to take in. When they get home, they may be excited to tell you everything... or they may be completely done talking and that's okay! Your child doesn't have to love every minute of school for it to be a successful first day. Give them time, patience and plenty of opportunities to come back to their safe place and recharge. The transition takes time. One day at a time.

Earlier in the week, KACL held its 9th Annual Heart Garden Ceremony, which our staff participate in to reflect on reconciliation and honour the legacy of the children, youth and families impacted by the Residential School System.

This year, our ceremony was led by Elder Dolores Kelly, who walked our staff through the day’s remembrance with a traditional teaching before leading everyone into a smudge. Afterwards, our staff and some of the children from our Kids’ Zone program planted hearts with messages speaking to healing the past and a more hopeful future.

Each year, the ceremony takes place among milkweed plants, the leaves of which lend themselves to monarch butterflies, which we understand as representing both the possibility of transformation over time, and especially when we gather, the interconnectedness of All Our Relations.

This month, we would like to acknowledge Sweet, Lake of the Woods and Wholesale Club as Inclusive Employers!

Since 2019, Sweet has worked closely with KACL Employment Services to find creative ways of ensuring their team could continue to work even when the world shutdown due to COVID-19. That same dedication and commitment to their team has lasted because at Sweet, you’re treated as part of the family 🍫

For years, Wholesale Club has had an open-door relationship with KACL Employment Services, connecting some people with their first job and some people with their forever job. Their team promotes a workplace that supports independence, kindness and inclusion, making it a pleasure to continually connect with them to find new opportunities for the people we support. 🍎

How's your summer going? Ours is going pretty darn good.

Last Friday, we gathered at Beatty Park in Keewatin for our Annual Community Picnic, where we were happy to welcome over 200 community members to make the most of the season with us.

A special shout out goes to our WELL Committee, which graciously put on a Maker's Showcase featuring dozens upon dozens of different art pieces for everybody to check out. Thank you as well to Gropp's Country Catering for helping us make sure no one left hungry!
