The fire hazard is high to extreme across much of Ontario today. Please use extreme caution if you are in a forested area or wildland-urban interface (areas where homes and communities are adjacent to forests). Ontario is currently responding to 160 active wildland fires. With high temperatures and extremely dry conditions, the potential exists for extreme fire behaviour. Avoid parking on dry grass, allow ATVs and other off-road vehicles to cool regularly, and refrain from using fire unless absolutely necessary.

This thunderstorm is located near Sherwood Lake and is moving east at 40 knots.

Description
Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms which may produce tornadoes. Strong winds, large hail and heavy rain are also possible.

What: Wind gusts of 90 to 110 km/h Hail up to tennis ball size Torrential downpours with 50 to 100 mm rainfall Tornadoes are possible

When: This afternoon and evening.

Additional information: Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon or this evening. Wind and hail are the main threats, however tornadoes are possible. There is also a risk of local rainfall of 50 to 100 mm if multiple storms move over the same area.

Significant damage or destruction to infrastructure, homes and the natural environment is possible.

Tornado watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes.

In the event of a tornado, or if a tornado warning is issued for your area: go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet. Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelter, and move to a strong building if you can. As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris. Be prepared for severe weather. If you hear a roaring sound or see a funnel cloud, swirling debris near the ground, flying debris, or any threatening weather approaching, take cover immediately. When out on the water, be prepared for severe weather. If threatening weather approaches make for shore and take shelter immediately. It is particularly dangerous to be on a small craft on the open water when lightning is occurring.

Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

Yellow Warning - Severe Thunderstorm

Description
At 3:18 p.m. CDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing strong wind gusts, up to quarter size hail and heavy rain.

This line of severe thunderstorms is located from Caddy Lake to Indian Bay to Big Island.

Motion: Moving northeast at 50 km/h.

Hazards: 90 to 100 km/h wind gusts. Quarter to ping pong ball sized hail. Heavy rain with local rainfall amounts up 50 mm possible.

Local utility outages are likely. Damage to roofs, fences, soft shelters or trees is likely. Large hail may cause significant damage and injury.

Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are expected to produce damaging hail, wind or rain.

Take immediate cover if a thunderstorm approaches. If outside, protect yourself from flying debris and hail. When thunder roars, go indoors! Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Don't drive through flooded roadways. Avoid low-lying areas.

Additional information: Snow and local blowing snow associated with an approaching system will develop tonight. Winds gusting up to 70 km/h are most likely along the Minnesota border.

Roads and walkways may be difficult to navigate. Visibility may be suddenly reduced to near zero at times. Road closures are possible. Allow extra time for travel.

Extreme Cold Warning

Description
A multi-day episode of very cold wind chills is expected.

What: Wind chill values of minus 40 to minus 45.

When: Beginning tonight and continuing through the weekend.

Additional information: A prolonged period of very cold wind chills will begin tonight and is expected to continue through the weekend. Wind chill values are expected to be near minus 40 late tonight through Thursday morning. Little relief is expected during the day as an Arctic airmass establishes itself over the region and remains in place through the weekend. Wind chill values of minus 45 will be possible Thursday night into Friday morning.

Extreme cold puts everyone at risk.

Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.

Watch for cold related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.
