Chefs in the Classroom - Edible Education with the Okanagan Chefs Association

In 2016 the Okanagan Chefs Association has launched an initiative entitled ‘Chefs in the Classroom – Edible Education.’
Modeled after other successful edible education classes all over North America, Chefs in the Classroom is unique in that it is an Okanagan inspired, hands-on curriculum with links to our Aboriginal community and practices. The highlight of the 7-lesson course is a field trip to a working farm with lunch hosted by members of the Okanagan Chefs Association. In 2021 we pivoted to a virtual platform and delivered our program to 10 school and 207 students in the Okanagan. Due to the continued uncertainty of outbreaks, the 2022 program will again be delivered virtually.

Next up, meet Chef Brett Thompson!

Born and raised in the Okanagan, Brett studied at Okanagan College and has cooked his way through local golf courses, w**eries, pubs, and fine dining restaurants. These days, he’s the Executive Sous Chef at Big White Ski Resort.

Brett loves the bounty we have here in the Okanagan, and sharing that excitement with our little chefs. We’re looking forward to seeing what he brings to the table on October 25!

Time to meet the chefs joining us for An A+ Evening! First up, Chef James Hanna 👨‍🍳

James works alongside the iconic Audrey Surrao and Chef Rod Butters at The Okanagan Table - KEC and has been a long time volunteer with Chefs in the Classroom. We’re so happy to have him cooking for us on October 25.

We asked what he loves about Chefs in the Classroom. His answer? Sharing what he knows with the kids, then hearing their stories about trying it out at home. 💚

Join us on Sunday, October 25th at Humo Kelowna for an unforgettable five-course dinner created by five incredible Okanagan chefs, featuring ingredients from our partner farms and w**e pairings from Summerland w**eries.

Proceeds support our seven-week program teaching local Grade 3 students how to grow, cook, and enjoy local food.

A little look back at one of last year’s incredible silent auction items: a private in-home dinner prepared by Chef B! 🍽️ Bernard Casavant

This was so much more than dinner. It was a full chef-created experience, served right in the winning bidder’s home.

Our silent auction is always packed with amazing food, w**e and local experiences, and we’re already working on this year’s lineup.

🌮 Taco party day!!

For our final in-class lesson, our little chefs worked together to build a full taco bar from scratch. Pickled onions, black bean & corn salsa, creamy coleslaw, and all the toppings. Safe to say there were some VERY proud chefs in the classroom today. 🥹

And can we talk about the gardens?! 🌱 Everything is growing like crazy, the worms are thriving, and the students have officially become little gardeners too.

Next stop… FIELD TRIP DAY! 🚜☀️

🐝 Buzz buzz! This week our little chefs learned all about bees, made cozy spring soup, and checked in on their hungry classroom worms with a fresh snack of veggie scraps. 🪱🍲🌱

Tiny chefs. Tiny worms. Big learning. 💚

This week we got our hands dirty learning about plant lifecycles, thinning and transplanting seedlings, then headed into the kitchen to make fresh tomato pasta sauce 🍅

First day of Chefs in the Classroom 2026 👩‍🍳🌱

We planted seeds, talked food, blended smoothies, and kicked off what’s going to be a pretty fun 7 weeks.

Safe to say… we’ve got a lot of future chefs in the making.

Next week, things get even better. Veggies, knife skills, and the arrival of our classroom compost crew 🐛
