Project Literacy Central Okanagan Society Project Literacy is a local charity that provides free literacy programs for immigrants, vulnerable families, adults, children, and seniors.

Donate to support literacy services in your community: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/11621 We match learners with trained volunteer tutors in order to provide free one-on-one English and Math literacy tutoring. We partner with local schools to provide reading support to children in grades 1-4 so they can improve their reading skills and do better in school. Our community of tutors is comprised of university students, teachers, professionals, trades people, and retired persons. Many have English as a Second Language training and experience. During recent years, we have found that the caliber of our English tutors and Math tutors continues to improve steadily – matching increasingly complex learner needs. All our tutors receive training and on-going support to ensure they have the necessary tools to help learners achieve their personal, academic or vocational goals. At any one time we have more than 100 active tutor/learner matches. The ability to communicate with fellow citizens, keep a job or secure a new one, enroll in higher education or overcome a dependency on social assistance, have been important milestones achieved by many of our learners. Project Literacy learners receive assistance with:
• Basic reading, writing and math skills;
• English as an Additional Language;
• Language Proficiency Index (LPI) testing;
• GED and specific grade preparation;
• Employment specific terminology;
• Trades math entrance exams;
• Apprenticeship training materials;
• Preparation for post-secondary courses;
• Skills upgrading for employment enhancement;
• Job application forms, citizenship preparation, and much more!

We've got a nice patio here at 107-2293 Leckie Rd and on warmer days some tutor-learner pairs sit outside!

It was a few days of painting, refinishing, lining and shoveling, but we are so happy with the result 🥳

Commemorating the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day: Every Child Matters

Across the country, you can find open to public local activities and gatherings organized to commemorate the history and legacy of residential schools.

There were 140 federally run residential schools in Canada that operated between 1867 and 1996. Survivors advocated for recognition and reparations and demanded accountability for the intergenerational impacts of harm caused. Please take this day to learn more about Canada's history

We are expanding our children's reading program into more okanagan schools this year and are looking for additional volunteers who would like to work one-on-one with children during the school year.

This program is available to students, grade 1-4, whose teacher believes they need a reading-skills boost.

The next general local elections will be held this year on October 17, 2026!

Voting in general local elections is an important way for people to take part in local government decision-making and have a voice in the decisions that affect their communities.

To qualify to vote in a general local election, you must:
• Be 18 years of age or older when they register to vote or 18 years or older on general voting day
• Be a Canadian citizen
• Have been a resident of B. C. for at least six months immediately before they register to vote
• Not be disqualified under the Local Government Act, or any other enactment from voting in local elections or be otherwise disqualified by law
