💙 Happy Family Day from the Adoption Centre of BC

Today, we honour the many beautiful ways families are formed — through love, commitment, courage, patience, and hope.

💖Family Day can hold many different emotions. For some, it’s filled with laughter and togetherness. For many waiting adoptive parents, it may be a day of longing and hope as they continue on their journey to build a family. And for birth parents who have made the loving and difficult decision to place a child for adoption, this day can carry deep reflection — love, grief, pride, and enduring connection.

At the Adoption Centre of British Columbia, we honour every part of the adoption story. We hold space for all members of the adoption triad — birth families, adoptive families, and adoptees — recognizing that each experience is unique and meaningful.

Today, and every day, we send compassion and strength to those parenting, those waiting, those remembering, and those hoping.

Families are built in many ways, and every story matters. 💛

"We don't always get it right. But we always return to each other—and maybe that's its own kind of celebration." 💙

Our latest blog shares an honest reflection on parenting through trauma, FASD, and the grief that comes when 'normal' looks different. Connection > perfection, always.

I know that 'the nervous system' has become a buzz word. Kinda like trauma informed did. And then buzzwords start to lose their meaning.

Let's take a collective breath and re-connect to the idea that buzz-word or not, trendy or not, all behavior begins when a neuron fires.

A neuron fires from a state of the nervous system.

The nervous system state is directly connected to what ultimately becomes the observable behavior.

This isn't trendy or a fad or a buzz-word. It's just- the science of behavior.

If you have a child with a resilient, robust nervous system then you probably don't need to focus on it so much.

But if you have a child with any vulnerability or sensitivity in their nervous system, a history of trauma, toxic stress, or adoption, a neurodivergent mind (which is BEAUTIFUL and is often accompanied by vulnerabilities), or PANS/PANDAS, Lyme then you don't really have the option to NOT focus on the nervous system.

Focusing on the behavior surely isn't working.

Let's shift our focus together! In this short, free webinar I'll help you understand what behavior really is. We'll look at where we want to focus on energy if we have a child with a very sensitive nervous system and sensitized stress response system. You'll walk away with resources, hope, and confidence that there's nothing wrong with either you or your child. You just have nervous systems that need some support!
