When fire sweeps through, community remains.

In a new article for The Times of Israel titled “When Fire Sweeps Through, Jewish Community Remains,” Ezra Shanken reflects on the wildfires affecting communities across British Columbia and the people showing up for one another in moments of uncertainty.

From families facing evacuation and displacement to neighbours opening their homes, volunteers preparing meals, and Community Connectors helping identify needs on the ground, the article is a powerful reminder of what community means when crisis arrives.

As Ezra writes, Jewish life in British Columbia is not defined by geography. It is defined by connection.

We know first-hand just how much Jewish spirit resides in small communities!

Jewish life is growing across British Columbia, and today, it’s on the front page of The Canadian Jewish News.

A new feature from The CJN’s North Star highlights Jewish Federation of British Columbia Community Connectors Program and the growing Jewish communities building connection, belonging, and vibrant Jewish life across the province.

From Comox Valley and Burnaby/New Westminster to Squamish, Whistler, the Okanagan, Vancouver Island, and beyond, local Jewish leaders are helping people gather, celebrate, support one another, and find community where they live.

As Mijal Ben-Dori shared in the interview, the goal is not to be infrastructure heavy. It is to be Jewish life heavy.

We are proud to see this work recognized nationally and grateful to our Community Connectors, partners, volunteers, and community members who are helping Jewish life thrive across BC.
