National Truth & Reconciliation Day
This day honours those who were taken from their homes and placed in residential schools around Canada. These schools forced Metis, Inuit, and First Nations children to disconnect from their culture and assimilate into Canadian society.
It is important for the reconciliation process for the individuals and families that were affected by the residential schools.
PacificSport Okanagan continues to focus on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action 87 to 91 regarding sport and reconciliation.
Call to Action 87: guides us towards a future where Indigenous sports systems and cultural programs are celebrated and embraced. Sport clubs in British Columbia can contribute by creating partnerships with Indigenous organizations to amplify the impact of these programs, making the sporting landscape truly inclusive and culturally rich.
Call to Action 88: Language and culture are the cornerstones of any community, and sport can serve as a powerful bridge to uphold them. For BC sport clubs, this presents a unique opportunity to integrate Indigenous languages, traditions, and symbols into their operations. From naming teams to incorporating Indigenous languages in promotional materials, sport clubs can create an environment that respects and celebrates the cultural diversity of their communities.
Call to Action 89: emphasizes the importance of providing Indigenous youth with opportunities for participation and development. By offering mentorship, coaching, and training programs.
Call to Action 90: calls for cultural competency training for individuals involved in the sports and recreation sectors. For sport clubs in British Columbia, this means equipping coaches, athletes, staff, and volunteers with the knowledge and understanding needed to create an inclusive and welcoming.
