It's deer romance season!

🦌 The rut is approaching!

As the days get shorter, deer prepare for their fall breeding season, known as the rut.

You may notice bucks rubbing their antlers on shrubs, displaying dominance or locking antlers with other males. These are natural seasonal behaviours, and giving deer space helps keep everyone safe.

🐾 Keep dogs leashed and under control.
🦌 Enjoy watching deer from a distance. Never approach or feed them.
🚗 Watch for deer crossing roads, especially at dawn and dusk.

Understanding their behaviour helps us keep wildlife wild and communities safe!

𝗔 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟭 𝗶𝗻 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝘆𝗼𝗻!

Our FOSS crews are hard at work out in Okanagan Mountain Provincial Park all week long! So far, work has been completed all the way from the Golden Mile Gate to Goode’s Creek and Buchan Bay.

With 6 to 7 crew members heading out each day for 7 to 11 hours at a time, these are long, tough days, especially with the long distances down in the southern portion of the trail. But with the autumn scenery, the park is absolutely spectacular!

Wildhorse Canyon Trail Buffing is Underway!

Our annual trail buffing of the iconic Wildhorse Canyon trail kicked off on Monday, October 5th! Our hard-working crews will be out all week long trimming and brushing the trail—taking in the beautiful fall colors along the way!

A big thank you to Monday’s crew for making huge headway:
🌲 Milt & Alan tackled the section going up and over the broad ridge to Goode’s Creek.
🌲 Lorne & Garry removed three fallen trees on the Buchan Bay trail and brushed out the section down into Buchan flats.
🌲 Mike , Brian & Corrine worked on the open slope section of Wildhorse, clearing away heavy brush.

Thanks to their hard work, these sections are looking fantastic and ready for your autumn hikes! Keep an eye out for our crews on the trail this week!

𝗙𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗼 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝘁𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁

On September 30th, FOSS and installed a fantastic new statue at Flamingo Flats, created by local artist and welding instructor Emilie Lougheed!

Emilie, who is a welder, multimedia artist, and mountain biker, brought her passions together for this special project in partnership with FOSS and BC Parks.

As Emilie explores her Métis heritage, incorporating that identity into the piece was deeply meaningful to her. The artwork features the five-petalled prairie rose, a symbol of the Red River Métis that honors the community and heritage of her ancestors.

The base of the sculpture also features three engravings:
🌸 Paykiiwikay — “Come and visit”
🌸 Gii naatoohtayn — “I listened”
🌸 Mâmawapowin — “A gathering”

Next time you’re out at Flamingo Flats, take a moment to pause, appreciate the details, and admire the flamingo!

FOSS was at MTBCO's Cranksgiving rides today with cupcakes and snacks.

𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀 𝘂𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗱!

There is going to be heavy trail traffic this weekend! MTBCO’s annual Cranksgiving race is taking place, staging out of the Stewart Rd East parking lot, so expect things to be extra busy.

A few quick reminders to help keep everyone safe and having fun...

𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀: Please stay alert, yield to racers, and avoid active race course trails.

𝗟𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝘂𝗽 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝘂𝗽𝘀: Please keep dogs on a leash around the parking area and Lost Lake Trail, especially on Saturday, when lots of young riders will be out on the course!

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲!

Our new parking signs at the Angel Spring lot are doing their job, and the parking lot is running smoother than ever. Trailers finally have plenty of space to turn around, and everything is feeling nice and organized.

A huge thank you to everyone for following the new signs and helping keep things running smoothly!

On Friday, September 25th, 9 volunteers met up with FOSS leads Al Milnes and Milt Stevenson at the Angel Springs parking lot to tackle some trail work.

After a quick "warmup" installing two new posts in the parking lot and running through a safety briefing, the team dove straight into trail maintenance 101. From there, they moved up Myra Bailout; clearing brush, skirting trees, raking, and opening up drainage like total pros!

To top off a great day, Fortis made a generous financial donation to FOSS to support our ongoing trail maintenance efforts. Thank you, Fortis, for your hard work and incredible support!
