Congratulations to Ski Resort Operations & Management at Selkirk College scholarship recipients. CWSAA, Whitewater, Red Mountain, and Sunshine Village each presented their awards to deserving students during the annual industry advisory meetings with Selkirk College this week. A new on-line leadership course for industry starts in January 2027, and a new 3 week lift mechanic course for June 2027 will be announced at the coming CWSAA fall meetings.

The ski industry is fortunate to have so many volunteers that make healthy outdoor winter recreation possible. In many cases across the west, these volunteer hours include the oversight of the ski areas themselves. Murray Ridge near Fort St. James BC is a shining example of a non-profit society run ski area. General Manager Cody Willick explains that the area has a legacy of community support as evidenced by the many contributors, formal and informal, that make the operation possible. Murray Ridge also happens to be the home of the longest Tbar in North America, which generated much positive attention throughout ski media earlier this year. A 4km haul rope equates to a 2km descent, featuring exceptional fall line skiing on exquisite cruisers and gladed terrain that have been known to locals for generations. A second surface lift services novice terrain at the base area which is home to a daylodge and shop. The daylodge features rentals, cafeteria and lounge. The latter two of are note for the food. Cinnamon buns, bannock, soups… if ever we had a mountain fare competition at spring conference… Murray Ridge would absolutely be in the running.

Hudson Bay Mountain is imposing and magnificent on many levels. It soars over the beautiful town of Smithers BC and is spectacular. You can see the ski runs from a café, bedroom window, and while strolling on mainstreet. There is even a community trail to town built with the Smithers Rotary Club that leads from the base of the chair to the town. On the drive to the ski area, one notices an exceptionally wide ski road which leads skiers to parking at the base of the resort’s chairlift, or to a second lot at the daylodge accessing one of two Tbars and a conveyor lift. This is also where 160 private slopeside cabins are located. In addition to its winter offering, Lex Rei-Jones, General Manager, and Cam Price, Maintenance Mananger, were excited to explain the Hudson Bay summer chairlift sightseeing operation on weekends. This complements an iconic alpine hike into Crater Lake, as well as a new multi-use trail that leads from the parking lots to the sub-alpine and rewards with stunning vistas of the surrounding valley and mountain peaks beyond.
