A little 2 AM hitchhiker 💡🦟

I stopped for gas around 2 AM and noticed this beautiful mayfly sitting on the gas pump.

I put my bank card down and he hopped right onto it, so I brought him home and placed him on the table.

Eleven hours later, he was still sitting in exactly the same spot.

It appears to be a burrowing mayfly (Hexagenia). What makes these insects remarkable is that they can spend a year or more living underwater as nymphs, but once they emerge as winged adults, their remaining lifespan may be only a day or two.

A pretty incredible little creature to find during a middle-of-the-night gas stop.

Ash falling in Oliver BC

This is ash falling through the air in Oliver, BC. During the day you barely see it. At night, shine a powerful flashlight through the air and suddenly it becomes visible — fine ash and pieces of burned material drifting everywhere.

It’s landing on our cars, skin and clothing. It gets into our eyes and lungs, and wildlife and pets are exposed to the same air. Eventually that material also settles onto plants, soil and water.

When wildfire smoke and ash are this heavy, this isn’t the time for unnecessary outdoor exercise. The harder you breathe, the more polluted air you inhale. Keep kids and pets inside when conditions are bad, keep windows closed, and use a properly fitted N95 when you need to be outside.

You may not see what’s in the air — until you shine a light on it.

Sometimes the best wildlife moments are tiny ones — no hiking deep into the bush, no big production, just slowing down enough to notice what’s already happening right beside you.

Nature is always busy if you actually stop and look.

🐻 Came across this bear while exploring today.

It was a hot day, and this guy was cooling off in the water and enjoying a little bath. I kept my distance and watched for a few minutes before continuing on.

Nature always has a surprise waiting around the next corner.

Little baby fish, and mom enjoying the beautiful sunny day at Vaseux Lake.
We also got to witness a small brown bear having a bath. I will upload that video shortly. What a beautiful place with a well-maintained Boardwalk and a big tower at the end you can go up and overlook the lake and see all the birds and some bees.
