Great volunteering opportunities!

It's time for planting!! We've got a LOT of plants, thanks so much to Dogwood Nursery! Now we need lots of volunteers to come help get them growing and take some tomato plants home for yourself too!! Here's another one of our favourite permaculture principles! 🌾 Use Renewable Resources! Lots of people are already familiar with the idea of harnessing alternative energies for power, but what about the renewable energies we can access on a daily basis, like "people power"? Pedal to the metal!! We love bicycles, especially when they can also be made accessible to folks with disabilities or mobility challenges.

There is also the idea of collecting rainwater for irrigation (especially in dry areas like here in the Okanagan), and using natural fertilizers like compost (in solid or tea form) to grow food.

One of our favourite permaculture principles is:
🌱 Observe and Interact: Take time to observe your surroundings and interact with your environment. By paying attention to patterns and processes, you can better understand how to work with nature rather than against it. Whether it's noticing where the sun shines brightest or observing the habits of local wildlife, every interaction provides valuable insights for designing sustainable systems.

Hello from hibernation! Today we'd like to share some photos from warmer days in 2023. These are some snaps of the collaborative project, Riparian ReAnimation, spearheaded by RESES member Madi Donald. This series of workshops engaged local youth to make puppets inspired by creatures found in a local creek. The puppets were then brought into the community through a series of performances. This project was run in collaboration with the University of British Columbia and the Rotary Centre for the Arts, with funding support from the City of Kelowna.

It was awesome getting to film at Rowcliffe Community Gardens for the RESES digital workshop project the other day!
We captured RESES board member Haruko's beautiful garden plot and got to learn about Bokashi Composting and strategies for using permaculture design for city living.

This project is funded by the Government of Canada's Community Services Recovery Fund.

Are you interested in applying sustainable design concepts to your life and building symbiotic relationships between the land, yourself, and your community? Local non-profit organization, Rhizome Eco-Social Education Society (RESES) is inviting all interested community members to participate in a survey to inform a series of brand new digital workshops about Ecological Design (also known by the terms “permaculture” or “regenerative design”). A special invite is extended to folks who self-identify as experiencing barriers to attending these kinds of workshops due to financial barriers, mobility, physical or mental health challenges, or others.
