Although insulin was discovered in 1921, it wasn’t until January 11, 1922 that the first insulin injection was given to 14 year old Leonard Thomson, who was dying from Type 1 Diabetes. Within hours, his blood sugar levels has dropped but scientists were informed that the drug was not pure enough. They worked hard to purify the drug and on January 23 1992, Leonard was given his second injection of Insulin and his levels became almost normal.

For the first time in history, Type 1 Diabetes was not a death sentence.

100 years on and millions of lives saved, all due to the medical breakthrough by Fredrick Banting, Charles Best, John Macleod and James Collip.

Canada discovered insulin.
Canada can cure diabetes.
