This is a great safety guide for children swimming in lakes and swimming pools. The color of the bathing suit can make it easier or more difficult to see children while they are swimming. This is a good reminder to always have adult supervision when children are swimming. (Thanks to Praire Lakes Healthcare System.)

Dry stone walls, like the one in this photo, can be seen in rural areas throughout Kawartha Lakes. Farmers constructed them when they were clearing their land. They used the stones taken from their fields to build walls as boundary markers and to contain their animals 🐄

The longest and most intact dry stone walls in Kawartha Lakes can be seen along Balsam Lake Drive, where they stretch for three kilometres along the road. These walls were built for grain merchant and railway promoter George Laidlaw. He purchased his Fort Ranch property in the 1860s to raise sheep and cattle. He commissioned a Scottish stone mason to build these walls in the 1880s 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

These walls are still standing today along Balsam Lake Drive, part of the Arts and Heritage Trail. Find out more at https://artsandheritagetrail.com
