It wasn't easy safely climbing up a 40 metre tower in the winter and hauling up equipment with hiking ropes to monitor air emissions for a new tailings facility. Sometimes, that's what's needed to collect real-time air quality data to support a Waste Discharge Authorization in British Columbia.

Waste Discharge Authorizations under the Environmental Management Act in BC aim to assess and mitigate potential health effects to people and the environment while supporting economic development.

“Remembrance reminds us that our nation has been through even more challenging times. Whether at war or during peace support operations, Canada’s veterans and fallen heroes alike can take comfort in our remembrance.”

The giant pangasius—also known as the paroon shark or Chao Phraya giant catfish (Pangasius sanitwongsei) is a freshwater species belonging to the shark catfish family. Once abundant in Southeast Asia’s rivers, it is now listed as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

This species holds deep cultural significance in Thailand, where it’s named after the Chao Phraya River, often called the “River of Kings.” Conservation efforts are underway to reintroduce these massive fish into their native waters, but the process is no small feat. Moving these giants from rearing ponds to transport trucks requires careful coordination.

That’s where volunteers come in—and sometimes, those hands-on opportunities are the most rewarding. Whether it's helping with logistics, monitoring water quality, or simply being part of a team working toward ecological restoration, every effort counts.

“You are what you eat,” as the saying goes—and for many communities in British Columbia, that includes country foods. Defined by Health Canada as foods sourced outside the commercial food system, country foods include those harvested by First Nations through traditional practices such as hunting, fishing, and gathering.

Assessing country foods is a vital step in understanding environmental impacts and ensuring food safety. These assessments are often conducted to support proposed large-scale development projects, but they are equally valuable for characterizing smaller-scale produce operations.

Twin Rivers provides specialized services to support country foods assessments across British Columbia, helping communities and project proponents evaluate potential risks and maintain the integrity of traditional food sources.

The C.A.R.E.S. Preservation Program—standing for Conservation, Awareness, Recognition, Encouragement, and Support—is dedicated to safeguarding freshwater fish species that face the threat of extinction. By inspiring aquarium enthusiasts to breed and share these vulnerable species, the program fosters a pathway for their eventual reintroduction into natural habitats.

This approach transforms personal passion and lifelong learning into a meaningful component of small business, creating opportunities to connect with global networks of researchers, conservationists, and Indigenous knowledge holders. Twin Rivers Environmental proudly embraces this philosophy, actively contributing to conservation efforts and promoting the stewardship of at-risk species throughout British Columbia—not just in words, but through action.
