Thinking about Rotary Exchange for yourself or someone you know? You’re in good company. Even Matthew McConaughey’s life-changing year as an exchange student helped shape the person he became. Rotary Exchange opens doors to new cultures, lifelong friendships, and experiences that can change the course of a life.

🌟 The Central Coast shaped an Oscar winner — and Rotary made it happen.

Before the Oscars, before the fame, there was Warnervale.

In 1988, a fresh-faced 18-year-old Texan named Matthew McConaughey stepped off a plane expecting Sydney. Instead, he found himself in a small Central Coast town — and it changed his life forever.

Here as a Rotary Youth Exchange student in District 9685, Matthew attended Gorokan High School and threw himself into whatever work he could find, from tending a pea farm to serving customers as an ANZ bank teller. No glamour, no shortcuts — just a young man learning what life was really about.

By his own account, that year on the Central Coast gave him something no classroom could — the perspective and self-knowledge to pursue acting over law or even a monastery. Not a bad return on a Rotary exchange! 😄

He later reflected on these formative experiences in his bestselling memoir Greenlights, a fascinating read that shines a new light on a part of the world we're lucky enough to call home.

This is exactly why Rotary Youth Exchange matters. The experiences we give young people have a way of rippling outward in ways we can barely imagine.

💬 Have you read Greenlights? Did you know about Matthew's Central Coast connection? Drop a comment below — we'd love to hear your thoughts!

🌎🌱 **World Environment Day, Grants Galore, and a Math Essay?! Rotary Recap** 🌱🌎

Could we have packed any more into one meeting?

Clara kicked things off with an invocation recognizing **World Environment Day**, which was established by the United Nations in 1972. She shared the inspiring story of two 16-year-old students from India who developed a natural solution to remove microplastics and won the Global Earth Prize.

Her challenge to all of us:

✅ Make one change that helps the environment.

✅ Spend some time outdoors this weekend and reconnect with nature.

Simple. Powerful. Necessary.

We also received a cheque from MPRO4 Entertainment after several of our members volunteered as bartenders at one of their recent events.

Proof once again that when Rotarians show up, good things happen.

🩺 Canadian Diabetes Association

🎨 Kamloops Arts Council

🗣️ Spelling Way Communications

Every one of these organizations is making a difference in our community, and we are proud to play a small part in helping them continue their important work.

🎤 **Guest Speaker – Our Very Own Melissa Arkinstall**

Today's classification talk belonged to Melissa, who gave us a behind-the-scenes look at both her professional and personal journey.

Melissa started with KPMG in 2005 as an audit student before quickly realizing that constant travel wasn't for her. Twenty-one years later she continues helping businesses navigate everything from CRA compliance to strategic planning.

But her story extends far beyond accounting.

She has served as Treasurer for the United Way for eight years, volunteered at countless community events, and has consistently looked for ways to give back.

We also learned:

🔥 She and Sheila have been friends since Grade 11.

🔥 She carried the Olympic Torch in 2010.

🔥 She participated in the Ride to Conquer Cancer.

🔥 She loves travelling, camping, and sunflowers.

A great reminder that everyone around the Rotary table has a story worth hearing.

---

📈 **Executive Update**

The executive shared that club dues will be increasing and that the cancellation of Ribfest has created some budget challenges.

The good news?

The club is already exploring new fundraising opportunities and continuing to look ahead.

Rotarians are problem-solvers. That's what we do.

🌎 **Student Report – Nauany**

As always, Nauany delivered one of the highlights of the meeting.

She reminded everyone about her upcoming Goodbye Party on June 29.

Then she shared something that caught everyone's attention:

On June 1st she had a dream that she was back home in Brazil.

She woke up crying.

Not because she wanted to go home...

But because she realized she doesn't want to leave Canada.

❤️

Her adventures continue:

🏔️ Visited Calgary and Lake Louise and confirmed it really is as beautiful as the photos.

⚾ Her friend caught a baseball at a game... and despite her requests, refused to give it to her. Friendship may now be under review.

📚 She had to write a Math Essay.

Yes. A Math Essay.

We're still trying to process that one.

🎵 She watched the Michael Jackson movie and was shocked by the number of animals he owned.

🎺 Next Tuesday, June 10 at 6:30 PM, her Senior Band performs at Sagebrush Theatre.

If you've enjoyed following Nauany's journey this year, come out and support her.

---

One meeting.

Environmental inspiration.

Community grants.

30 years of Rotary service.

An Olympic torchbearer.

A future band performance.

And a math essay that nobody can explain.

That's Rotary.

If you're looking for a way to make a difference, build friendships, and have a little fun along the way, come join us for breakfast.

Another Rotary morning filled with perspective, laughter, community, and a reminder that sometimes the best thing we can do for someone…is simply sit beside them.

Tina “Green Thumb” Lang opened the meeting reflecting on gardening, hard work, and how pulling weeds apparently doubles as a gym membership. 🌱💪 But the real heart of her invocation came from a beautiful Winnie the Pooh passage about difficult days and the importance of simply being there for one another.

Sometimes people don’t need solutions.
Sometimes they just need a Piglet.
That message hit home for many around the room.

📣 Announcements & Upcoming Events:

Katie shared updates on prize collection for our upcoming fundraiser with plans to have everything wrapped up and submitted for licensing by the end of May.

Tom gave a recap of the recent Spelling Bee where our team battled hard against some very competitive opponents. We’re still recovering from words with way too many silent letters.

Upcoming events include:
🥾 Hike & Garbage Pickup
🍔 Rescheduled Pit Stop
🇨🇦 Nauany’s Going Away Party – June 29
(Potluck style…so start preparing your most Canadian dish now. Looking at you, ketchup chips and questionable Jell-O salads.)

🎓 Guest Speaker: Dr. Airini – President & Vice Chancellor of Thompson Rivers University

Dr. Airini shared TRU’s vision for opening opportunities across our region through education, research, and innovation.

One of the coolest examples discussed was how AI technology is helping cancer specialists analyze MRI scans faster and more effectively. Pretty incredible what research happening right here in our community can accomplish.

She also shared a personal connection to Rotary — receiving a Rotary student award years ago before she even knew what Rotary truly was. Looking back now, she credits experiences like that for helping shape her future and reinforcing how important Rotary’s work is both locally and globally.

Dr. Airini also spoke about the importance of international students and diversity at TRU as BC continues facing workforce shortages and growing economic demands. TRU is working toward increasing domestic enrollment while continuing to welcome international students who contribute so much to our community and economy.

🌎 Student Update – Nauany

Nauany shared updates on what has clearly been a very busy stretch of life lately.
⚽ She played her final soccer game
🏃‍♀️ Ran a HALF MARATHON because apparently regular people activities are no longer enough
🎶 Attended band camp at Rockridge and shared some of the challenges during their showcase performance

She also let everyone know about:
🎼 Another band showcase coming up June 10 at Sagebrush
🎭 School play performances happening June 5 & 6

At this point we’re all wondering if she ever actually sleeps.

🌎 News, Weather & Sports:

Morgan brought the updates today including:
🗑️ A 34% decline in litter across America since 2020
🐴 The successful return of the Asiatic wild ass (Kulan) to Eastern Mongolia through conservation efforts
🏒 The Habs beating the Sabres 6-3
⚾ Updates on the Jays and TRU WolfPack Baseball

Not bad for one meeting:
Friendship.
Education.
Community.
Sports.
Wild donkeys.
And Winnie the Pooh.

That’s Rotary.

Rotary Recap: Service That Reaches Far Beyond Our City 💙

Today’s meeting opened with reflections from a recent trip to Belize, reminding us that Rotary service extends well beyond Kamloops.

Our club contributed $5,000 to the Belize project — and through district and international matching funds, that gift grew even further.

That’s the power of Rotary.

Local generosity.
Global impact.
Real results.

The stories shared were a reminder that hands-on service, partnership, and compassion can create lasting change anywhere in the world.

📣 Community Announcements

Dave from the Kamloops Brain Injury Association shared details on two upcoming family-friendly events for children under 12:
🐢 Turtle Race
🚲 Bike Rodeo
They are still looking for:
Volunteers
Someone with a truck to help transport equipment
Sometimes making a difference is as simple as lending a hand.

📅 Upcoming Events

There is no shortage of ways to get involved:
🐝 Spelling Bee
🍸 May 8 Bartending Fundraiser

Consistency matters. Service over time matters even more.

💗 Grant Presentation – Days for Girls

We welcomed Terry Lynn Stone, receiving a grant on behalf of Days for Girls.

Terry recently helped distribute menstrual health kits in Belize and shared an urgent current need for 1,000 kits in Nigeria.

These projects provide dignity, education, and access to basic health resources that many people go without.

🧠 Guest Speaker: Tera Hildebrand – Alzheimer Society

Tera shared the important work of the Alzheimer Society of BC, including:
Free support programs for families and caregivers
Multilingual dementia helplines
Education and navigation resources
Research funding
She also spoke alongside Sheila about co-chairing the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s for more than five years.

This year’s walk honouree is Marilyn Ezzard, wife of Ken Ezzard, who sadly passed away this year after living with Alzheimer’s.
Ken shared the family’s journey after Marilyn’s diagnosis in 2015, speaking honestly about caregiving, love, and the importance of support for families facing this disease.

It was a moving reminder that behind every diagnosis is a family walking the road together.

🌎 Student Report – Nauany
Nauany once again stole the show with perhaps the most important question of the morning:
Why do the people in the back corner of the room always sit together every meeting?
Her theory?
Maybe it’s the hairstyles… or lack of them. 🦲😄
Honestly, fair question.
She continues to bring fresh perspective, humour, and a lot of energy to every meeting.

🌍 Student Update – Addie
Our outbound student Addie shared exciting news about her upcoming exchange to Finland.
From August through next June, she’ll live with host families, attend school, and experience a new culture firsthand.

Experiences like this shape future leaders.

Another meeting that showed Rotary at its best.
Helping locally.
Giving globally.
Standing beside people when it matters most.
And never taking ourselves too seriously.

When Things Get Tough… Rotarians Step Up 💙

Terri opened the meeting with a powerful reminder of what service really looks like.

When Canada Post couldn’t deliver Food Drive bags… Rotarians didn’t complain.
They showed up. Delivered them. Made sure the Rotary Food Drive still happened.

That’s the difference. That’s Rotary.

They’re pushing for:
More local filming opportunities
A potential motion picture studio
Stronger partnerships across municipalities
👉 If you own a business or property — get it listed. Opportunity is knocking.

🌎 Student Report – Nauany
Busy week… as usual:

Played two soccer games (tough losses)
⚽ Then bounced back beating Brock — even after taking a ball to the chest
🎶 Senior Band took Gold in Kelowna — heading to Nationals
🏉 First rugby game… quickly decided that’s not her sport
And yes… experienced her first bush party 😄
She’s not just participating — she’s all in.

Tom

All receiving Exemplary Service Awards for their contributions to the community. Well earned.
Another meeting that shows exactly what Rotary is about.

Rotary Recap: Don’t Judge Too Fast… And Show Up Anyway 💙

JR kicked things off with a story we’ve all lived in some form.
Two young guys show up at the door — power washer, wheelbarrow, ready to clean compost bins.

He passes.

Then comes the look from his wife. You know the one.

Next thing you know… he’s calling them back and the bins are getting cleaned.
The lesson?
Generalization.
He assumed young people don’t have the drive these days — and got proven wrong pretty quickly.

So the question is…
How often do we do that?
And how do we react when we’re the ones being judged?

📅 What’s Coming Up

Rotary Conference is happening now
🌊 Clean the Beach – Sunday
🚧 Adopt-a-Road – 22nd

🎉 Club Milestone
Roxanna – 31 years in Rotary
That’s not participation. That’s commitment.

🏡 On Tour: Mount Paul Community Food Centre

👉 Everything focused on one thing: good food for everyone

But this isn’t just about food.

It’s about:

Supporting mental and physical health
Giving people a place to belong

Adults: Hands-on cooking, nutrition, connection

Collaborations: Partnering with other social agencies

🥕 Food Access & Support
