Happy Indigenous Peoples Day!

Indigenous Peoples Day was designated to honor and celebrate the enduring legacy Indigenous communities have on the land, waters, and wildlife. Since time immemorial, the Coast Salish People have rightfully inhabited the land on which Camp Nor’wester exists.

We live, play, and learn on the ancestral lands and waters of the Lummi, Samish, Swinomish, Nooksack, Saanich, Songish, Sooke, and Semiahmoo nations, and commit to understanding and honoring the history and culture of Coast Salish Peoples throughout our time at camp and throughout our lives.

Today and every day we are honored and grateful for the generations of connection, learning, and celebration shared at Camp Nor’wester by Indigenous and First Nations members of the Camp community. Nor’wester is committed to maintaining, respecting, and honoring those relationships, the lands on which we exist, and the peoples who belong there.

We wrap up Staff Appreciation September with the people who made it all possible!

Photographer Ana and Videographer Ruby made up this summer’s Lens Crew and did a fantastic job capturing the essence of Camp. It’s thanks to them that we were able to keep everyone connected with the happenings of camp and campers all summer long. Beyond the summer, their hard work shows up on social media, blogs, newsletters, the summer movie (we’ll repost the preview Ruby made to our story in case you missed it), and more.

As we approach the end of Staff Appreciation September, it felt important to put together a big post filled with BIG appreciation for the Kitchen Team!

Working in the camp kitchen requires grit, determination, creativity, and teamwork. Preparing 3 meals a day for 300 people is no joke. Not to mention all the dishwashing and cleaning required! This year’s team came came from four countries and included former campers, returning Kitchen staff, and first timers!

Help appreciate the people who keep camp moving and grooving. These folks put a LOT into keeping Nor’wester and the people that make it up functional, operational, and feeling good.

🚤 Skipper is not a solo job and yet Pete took it on by himself this summer! Sometimes doing 6 or more boat runs in a day on top of running errands and caring for our fleet. Thank you for getting us where we needed to be, collecting mail and prescriptions, keeping things a float!

🩺The Health Center team this summer comprised of nurses Bess, Cam, and Mackenzie and Health Care Assistant Brynn. Summer camp health care is no joke, especially when you’re on a remote island! Thank you for all you did, from training staff to caring for bumps and scrapes, broken bones and everything in between.

🎵Music is at the very core of what makes Camp feels like Camp - it keeps us happy, connected, and moving through each day. Scarborough and Cooper did all that and more this summer!

Today we appreciate the Trip Leaders and Packout Manager; the team who made this summer’s trips possible!
⛵️🧗‍♂️🚴‍♂️🥾⛏️🛟🚲⛰️

Each Trip Leader facilitates the planning and ex*****on of multiple trips within their specialty (climbing/mountaineering, backpacking, sailing, and biking). They also support the outcamp program by maintaining and organizing gear and going on overnights. Trip Leaders are often the first people we turn to for last minute hospital visits, U-Haul and van driving, and unit coverage.

The Packout Manager is responsible for organize and packing meals for hundreds of campers and staff each week. The manage the food-side all trips and overnights - from interpreting menus and portions, to maintaining stoves and cookware, to managing dietary needs.

Thank you all for filling these HARD and essential roles!

No amount of appreciation for Camp Ops is too much!

The Camp Ops team worked incredibly hard this summer keeping camp clean and running smoothly while also really showing up for the camper experience, particularly in their unit.

THANK YOU for all you did to keep camp running through all the ups and downs of the summer 🙌

Thank you to this summer’s Ropes Team for keep us safe and challenging us to try new things! Not only did the run a plethora of team building games, high and low ropes activities, and climbing adventures but they also stepped up and showed up at camp in a variety of ways.
