At Day One Society, we believe that access to education, support, and opportunity can make a meaningful difference in someone’s recovery journey.

We invite you to read Rudy Braun’s story and learn how the Out of the Ashes Bursary helped him pursue education, build stability, and move forward with a renewed sense of direction and purpose. As Rudy shares, “So take the step. Not because it is easy, and not because success is guaranteed, but because the effort itself matters.”

We appreciate Rudy for sharing his experience so openly and thoughtfully, and we hope his story encourages others who may be considering taking that next step.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Janet and Spencer Bryson of the Stollery Charitable Foundation for their generous support of Day One Society.

Through their grant, we were able to repave our parking lot, which had been in need of repair for many years. The improvements have made a meaningful difference to the space and to everyone who accesses our services each day.

We are truly grateful for their generosity and continued support of the work happening at Day One Society.

What’s your top reason for choosing to work in detox?

“It’s an area I’m genuinely interested in. The work is unique, the nursing is largely autonomous, and most clients truly appreciate what staff do for them. It’s also one of the easiest places to make a meaningful difference.”

At Day One Society, those are the kinds of reflections we hear from our team every day.
This is more than a job—it’s an opportunity to be part of something impactful. To support individuals at a critical moment in their journey. To work in a clinical environment that values both independence and collaboration.

We’re currently recruiting nursing staff who are looking for purpose-driven work in a supportive and compassionate setting.

If you’re ready to make a difference, connect with Siân at [email protected] to learn more.

Returning to school after recovery can come with financial challenges that make it difficult to move forward. Out of the Ashes Bursary helps ease that pressure, giving people the opportunity to focus on their education and build a new path ahead. We are grateful to Kamloops Dental and Implant Solutions, Dr. Ho-Young Chung, Implant Dentistry for his continued support through his annual $5,000 contribution. As Dr. Chung shares, “Freedom is just on the other side of suffering.” His generosity reflects a belief in creating real opportunities for people to move forward.

Thank you for helping make this work possible.

Celebrating a Lifetime of Service 💙

Congratulations to Marilyn McLean (Hogg) on her nomination for the City of Kamloops Exemplary Service Award, a recognition that reflects decades of extraordinary commitment to community.

From helping establish Special Olympics British Columbia in its earliest days to leading Day One Society as President, Marilyn’s impact reaches across generations. Her work has strengthened inclusive sport, supported individuals on their recovery journeys, and ensured strong governance for vital community organizations.

Her influence extends further through restorative justice initiatives, leadership with Thompson Rivers University, literacy tutoring, and countless volunteer roles that have quietly shaped a more compassionate and connected Kamloops.

What stands out most is not just the breadth of her service, but her perspective:

“I get so much more out of volunteering than what I put in.”

That spirit has inspired athletes, students, colleagues, and community members alike.

Marilyn’s nomination is more than well-deserved, it’s a reminder of the profound impact one person can have through a lifetime of choosing to give back.

Thank you, Marilyn, for helping make Kamloops stronger.

What makes a workplace meaningful for nurses?

“The happiest nurses I have seen have been at hospice and detox.”

It’s a reminder of what many of our team already know—this work is challenging, but it is also profoundly meaningful. Nurses here are part of moments that matter, supporting people through stabilization, recovery, and hope.

We are currently recruiting nursing staff who are looking for purpose-driven work in a supportive clinical environment.
