We have a winner!

Congratulations to Chloe Taylor, winner of our Design the Standard challenge.

We invited our community to imagine what Standard Office Space could become, and Chloe created a concept centred on connection, creativity, inclusion and the way people actually use a shared workspace.

Her proposal looks at how the space can help people meet, share ideas and grow together.

Some of her ideas include a café-style communal hub with locally sourced coffee and a “What’s Brewing?” idea board, a Local Makers Marketplace, flexible gathering rooms, local art, greenery, wellness-focused lighting and thoughtful ways to support different work styles.

What stood out was how well the design reflected what we want Standard Office Space to feel like: welcoming, collaborative and built around the people who use it.

A recent conversation around the Standard Office Space water cooler got us talking about something we see all the time.

(We don't actually have a water cooler, but that's maybe something we'll consider for our new space.)

The conversation was about newer business owners and how often they seem to think they need to have everything figured out before they ask for help.

There can be this feeling that the marketing should already be polished, the systems should make sense, the records should be organized and there should be some kind of solid plan in place before reaching out to someone with more experience.

A lot of that comes down to one fear: not feeling “legit” enough yet.

The funny thing is, business owners are usually the last people who are going to judge someone for not having it all together. Most entrepreneurs know what it feels like to try something that does not work, rethink an offer, rebuild a system, change direction or learn something the expensive way. Business owners tend to be creative and experimental people, which is probably why so many are also happy to share what they know.

That conversation is part of what has us so excited for our upcoming Mastermind on September 24.

The idea is to create a space where business owners can bring the thing they are stuck on, talk it through with other people who understand business, get some perspective and leave with a few new ideas.

Nobody needs to arrive with a perfect business. In fact, that would kind of defeat the point.

Sometimes supporting local means buying something, but sometimes it means inviting someone into the room before they feel completely ready to walk into it.

And yes, we take that responsibility very seriously.

Our house coffee is a custom blend made for us by the lovely humans at Twisted Goat Coffee, because if you’re going to spend the day building a business, answering emails, pitching ideas and getting things done, your coffee should be pulling its weight too.

Come for the workspace, the community and the really good people.

We are proud to be part of the North Shore community, and we know many of you are too. While no community is perfect, this neighbourhood is filled with people, businesses, and organizations working hard every day to make it stronger.
