March = Kindness 😃

In Catholic teaching, kindness is a fruit of the Holy Spirit and a moral virtue (often linked to charity/love) that disposes a person to desire and actively work for the well-being of others. It involves compassion, generosity, and patience, recognizing the inherent dignity in every person. 🌼

Daily Practices for Cultivating Kindness:

• Daily Acts of Service: helping those in need, offering a smile, or giving up a parking spot.
• Speech and Thought: consciously thinking and speaking kindly about someone daily, avoiding rash judgment and gossip.
• Anticipate Needs: a kind person is obliging, proactively looking for ways to assist others.
• Pray for Others: Actively pray for those who have hurt you, or for the lonely and sick, as a form of spiritual charity.
• Works of Mercy: visit the sick, feed the hungry, or counsel the doubtful.
• Sacrificial Love: a form of mortification that requires self-denial and putting others’ needs first.
• Evangelization: kind actions are a powerful, often silent, way to share the faith and show God’s love.

“Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you”. Ephesians 4:32

A Prayer for the community of Tumbler Ridge 🙏🏼

God of mercy and compassion,
We come before You with heavy hearts.

We lift up to You those who were shot and killed in Tumbler Ridge yesterday.
Receive them into Your loving presence.
Hold them in eternal peace,
and surround their families and friends with comfort that is deeper than words.
In their shock, in their grief, in their anger and confusion,
be their steady refuge.

We pray for those who were injured.
Stretch out Your healing hand over every wound—
seen and unseen.
Guide the doctors, nurses, and caregivers with wisdom and skill.
Restore bodies, calm anxious minds,
and renew hope where fear has taken hold.

We pray for those who witnessed the violence.
Shield their hearts and minds from lasting trauma.
When memories feel overwhelming, bring gentle peace.
When sleep is restless, bring rest.
Surround them with safe people, compassionate listeners,
and the assurance that they are not alone.

We lift up the entire town.
Where there is fear, sow courage.
Where there is division, grow unity.
Where there is anger, plant understanding.
Help neighbors to care for one another,
to show up for one another,
to rebuild trust and safety together.

In the midst of heartbreak,
be our light.
In the presence of violence,
teach us the ways of peace.
Bind this community together with compassion,
strength, and hope for tomorrow.

Amen.

February = Respect 😊

Catholic teaching on respect is rooted in the belief that every human being is created in the image and likeness of God, granting them inherent, inviolable dignity from conception to natural death. This principle demands that all people be treated as “another self,” with charity, courtesy, and justice, regardless of their behavior, status, or difference.

Respect in Action 🏃🏻‍➡️

Active Listening: Genuinely listening to understand, not just to respond. 👂🏼
Kindness and Courtesy: Speaking kindly, avoiding gossip, and using good manners. 👄
Forgiveness: Practicing forgiveness, as the Lord forgave us. ✌🏻
Respectful Dialogue: Engaging in conversations with others—even those with different views—with humility, honesty, and
charity. 🤝
Proper Use of Language: Avoiding coarse language, insults, and demeaning, harmful, or degrading speech. 🫶🏻

Respect for self and others: “Do you not realize that you are a temple of God with the Spirit of God living in you?” - 1 Corinthians 3:16

Day five:

1. Bless yourself if you hear someone take the Lord’s name in vain - Or say a prayer to yourself or aloud if you feel brave. People don’t like to be corrected so discern on a case-by-case basis. Sometimes I say a prayer quietly, sometimes louder if I think it might do some good.

2. Your Soul must be attractive - We can be tempted to be negative and judgmental about “The world” or about “The Church” or about “life”. That just makes your soul ugly. It’s also depressing. It stinks. It’s like having bad breath. You may have good things to say, but nobody can stay being around you. Your soul doesn’t reflect the reality that you are trying to proclaim. If you don’t have joy or peace in Christ, you shouldn’t be trying to convince others. Convince yourself first!

Day four:

1. Acts of Kindness - Perform small acts of service (e.g. helping a neighbour) that reflects Christ’s love. Shovel a neighbours walk or bake them some cookies. Open the door for a stranger at the market or let them go before you in the check out line.

2. Give way holy things - Carry miraculous medals and give them out. Not too long ago, I saw a woman crying in the airport. I gave her a medal and she was so grateful. She stopped crying and thanked me. My friend Gloria is really good at giving people Green Scapulars. You’d be surprised how many people will start wearing them! You can make and give Rosaries and Holy Cards. Get creative! Make a strategy. Whenever you give something to another person, they are more willing to listen to what you have to say. If it’s truly from the heart, they can feel it. Heart speak to heart.

Day three:

1. Bless yourself when you pass a Catholic Church - This used to be something taught to Catholic school kids. Since Jesus is present in the Eucharist, we honour Him and teach others this Catholic Church is a special place for us. It also comforts us to know we never walk alone in this life. ⛪️

2. Say a prayer for the dead when passing a cemetery - This one may be less of a public display than the others, but it helps our children and grandchildren to remember to pray for the dead. Of course, it may get difficult on long car trips with many various cemeteries, as our children tend to be very enthusiastic about this one so they never let go of an opportunity to point out a cemetery. (Also, say a prayer or make the Sign of the Cross when the ambulance passes.) 🚑

Day two:

1. Wear a religious themed t-shirt - find a supplier on Etsy or check out EWTN here: https://www.ewtnreligiouscatalogue.com/Catholic-T-Shirts

2. Set a good example each Sunday - How? by going to Mass and avoiding unnecessary work. When we leave for Mass each Sunday, we set an example to our neighbours that Sunday is special.
